"Most Toxic Falling Satellite Ever" To Hit Earth - Radiation And Toxins Could Hit City

Other Before Its News Article From This Author:

The REAL Occupy Movement! Occupy Building 7!

The out of control Russian Probe Phobos-Grunt is on a collison course somewhere on earth (hopefully the ocean) and it contains toxic chemicals as well as radiactive cobalt!

From Discovery News:

As if that wasn’t enough bad news, we are looking at an uncontrolled toxic reentry scenario. Phobos-Grunt — correctly written “Fobos-Grunt,” meaning “Phobos-Soil” or “Phobos-Ground” — is fully-laden with unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine and nitrogen tetroxide; that’s ten tons of fuel and oxidizer. The probe itself weighs-in at only three tons.

The majority of the fuel will likely vaporize during reentry, but everyone will be hoping for a splash-down in an ocean (which covers two-thirds of Earth, fortunately), as the wreckage will still be hazardous. There’s also a small quantity of radioactive cobalt-57 in one of the science missions housed in the probe — a fact that will most likely cause a media frenzy.

It is for these reasons that the Russian media is dubbing Phobos-Grunt “Most toxic falling satellite ever.

(NOTE: At time of writing, there is no official word from the Russian space agency about the Phobos-Grunt situation.)

Though Russian mission controllers are frantically trying to regain control of the craft, it’s not looking good. Today’s efforts are widely regarded as a last-ditch attempt to salvage the mission. Other space agencies such as NASA and ESA have offered to assist, but it’s looking like the probe is quickly becoming unrecoverable.

More news from Spaceflightnow:

Phobos-Grunt was heading to the Martian moon Phobos, where it would touch down, gather a half-pound of samples and return them to Earth in a shielded re-entry capsule.

With no success so far in reviving the $163 million mission, experts are more convinced Phobos-Grunt will crash somewhere on Earth in the next few weeks. For now, Russia plans to keep trying.

Major General Vladimir Uvarov, a former space expert in the Russian military, told the Rossiiskaya Gazeta newspaper he has lost optimism in Phobos-Grunt’s chances for recovery.

“In my opinion, the Phobos-Grunt probe has been lost. This probability is very high. At any rate, it is much higher than the chances for reactivating the probe,” Uvarov told the newspaper.

Stay tuned as we cover this topic in more detail in the coming days. Where this is going to hit remains unknown at this time.

Newsflash: Earth and hostile inhabitants SLAM into peaceful Russian satellite! Putin declares WWIII!

    • Jude

      @building5, nice attitude.
Perhaps because you’re really, really afraid of where you’ll wake up for all eternity if it kills you?

    • building 5

Jude, I AM concerned where I’ll be in eternity, but let’s try to keep things in perspective.

They are using HAARP to cause strange sounds in the sky.

Ocean?!?! oh sure man’s (and woman’s) dumping ground. At least if it fell to the ground it could be cleaned up. People can clean toxic soil, but getting Cobalt back out of the ocean??? Good luck, and we do eat from it you know!

@DGWDJ And a misposted one I think. See ‘Teens using vodka soaked tampons to get drunk’.

      The price of technology.

@Building 5 – great attitude to your fellow human being there. Perhaps when you heard about the shameless, atrocious slaughter of thousands of Libyan people by NATO recently it didn’t matter to you because they weren’t smashing into your house at three in the morning and murdering you and your family.

I’m sure we’ll all be just fine if it does hit you. One less selfish, uncaring doorknob in the world. What a tragedy..

Forget the cobalt its used in x-ray machines all over the place easy to get rid of if in one piece. If it fall in sea no problem the radiation cannot travel far through water, and even if leaks out of container dispersed in millions of gallons of salt water. The other stuff is 1000’s times worse better the sea than land, if that stuff disperses in a built up area or the cloud travels to one it is a big problem like chemical warfare attack! Think cyanide….. polluted air and ground for long time.

With all the major nuclear disasters that have occurred, from Chernobyl to Takashima, and all those just waiting to happen, everyone’s obsessing over a tiny amount of radioactive cobalt?

Someone needs to get their priorities in line with respect to their importance. Yes, this satellite is of concern, but I think greater attention needs to be paid to those disasters that have already occurred, and those that are waiting to happen.

A tiny amount of radioactive cobalt is “a drop in the ocean” compared to what’s been released into it by the Takashima disaster alone.
