Why Silicon-Based Aliens Would Rather Eat Our Cities Than Us: Thoughts On Non-Carbon Astrobiology
Editor’s note: Bruce Dorminey, science journalist and author of “Distant Wanderers: The Search for Planets Beyond the Solar System,” interviews NASA astrochemist Max Bernstein for Universe Today about the possibility of Silicon-based life.
Conventional wisdom has long had it that Carbon-based life, so common here on earth, must surely be abundant elsewhere; both in our galaxy and the universe as a whole.
This line of reasoning is founded on two major assumptions; the first being that complex carbon chain molecules, the building blocks of life as we know it, have been detected throughout the interstellar medium. Carbon’s abundance appears to stretch across much of cosmic time, since its production is thought to have peaked some 7 billion years ago, when the universe was roughly half its current age.
The other major assumption is that life needs an elixir, a solvent on which it can advance its unique complex chemistry. Water and Carbon go hand in hand in making this happen.
While the world as we know it runs on Carbon, science fiction’s long flirtation with Silicon-based life — “It’s life, but not as we know it” — has become a familiar catchphrase. But life of any sort should evolve, eat, excrete, reproduce, and respond to stimulus.

you are silicon based-so much so-that you will become in the future-completely robots-no creativity-no soul-no chance ever again to evolve as a species-a collective consciousness. You are killers and you accept murder-you are liars and you chose to believe lies-you hate the truth and reject it. Life in Silicon Valley, California, is silicon based. In fact, just about all the life on earth presently, via the advent of the computer, is silicon based. One day, possibly soon (as the computer increases man’s intelligence sufficiently), it will be impossible to define life in terms of the strictly carbon based paradigm, as life actually consists not only of its fleshly constituents, but of all its functions, including those that supply and is the daily bread.
The failure of the carbon-based paradigm to include the host of items that touch and enter into, for the express purposes of maintaining and sustaining, carbon based life, is a continuing monumental scientific error on humankind’s part. Typical earth life is not only entombed in carbon based fleshly existence, but it IS also what it consumes, uses, does, and requires for its survival. One actually IS what one consumes. What does one eat? One eats all manner of minerals that are silicon based, without which carbon based life could not flourish. Minerals are as much an integral constituent component of fleshly carbon based life as carbon itself.
Sorry to disabuse y’all like this, but truth must be told. (Wink, wink.)
