It has been a long standing puzzle to astronomers: why is the Earth’s orbit tipped 7 degrees relative to the sun’s equator?
Now a new theory suggests that violent stage of our solar system’s history, an errant young star strayed close and pulled our developing planets out of whack with the sun’s equator.
Konstantin Batygin of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Massachusetts, suggests that our star had a near stellar neighbour at the time Earth formed.

It is the gravitational of this nearby star on our developing system that explains why the planets don’t orbit neatly around the sun’s equator.
Dr Batygin outlines his theory in a letter published in the journal Nature titled A primordial origin for misalignments between stellar spin axes and planetary orbits.

Sir Fred Hoyle, the British astronomer who preferred a Steady-State theory to Hubble’s Big Bang, remarked that it was not possible to differentiate between a model of planetary architecture which places the sun in orbit around the earth, and the alternative, in which the earth orbits the sun. The latter is, of course, almost universally believed by hoi polloi, and by most astronomers. This should be quite a shocking revelation to one and all.
Clearly Hoyle was neither mad nor was he stupid. I believe that such was his eminence in the field, that he was for a time the Astronomer Royal, as was that other illustrious figure, Isaac Newton.
All the evidence seems to point towards the truth of his idea that the universe is not expanding following on from a Big Bang, but it is in a static condition. The evidence for the mainstream assertion is derived from the Red Shift phenomenon observed by Hubble; however, both he and his primary collaborator very soon distanced themselves from the idea; not so the masses, who find it hard to think for themselves, and therefore invariably follow the consensus viewpoint. This latter proclivity also ensures that, as obedient clones of each other, they will receive as much funding for their various projects as they desire; should they break ranks with the majority, they know that this will be denied them as punishment for their temerity. Thus has it always been. You will remember how few souls had the effrontery to inform the Emperor that he was naked, despite the clear evidence for that fact.
In a word, then, the earth lies stationary at the centre of the created universe. This is a big idea to swallow, as it has many ramifications, not least of which is the fact that we here on earth are infinitely more important and central to the scheme of things than many would wish you to believe.
The 7′ tilt of earth’s axis is thrown into doubt if the earth does not have an axis, because it is not spinning. So rather, the sun orbits us at this angle, for reasons which are presently unknown.

Or is it possible that the Sun wobbles on its axis, similar to the Earth? Such a wobble would have no effect on the orbits of the planets, but would explain the orbital differential in relation to the sun’s equator.
