More Than 78,000 People Sign Up for One-Way Trip to Mars

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Two weeks into a nineteen week application period, more than 78,000 people have applied to become a settler of Mars in 2023.

Mars One, the nonprofit with the goal of establishing a human settlement on the planet, announced the milestone.

“This is turning out to be the most desired job in history,” said Bas Lansdorp, co-founder and CEO of Mars One, in the announcement. “These numbers put us right on track for our goal of half a million applicants.”

All applicants have to pay a registration fee, between $5 and $73, depending on what country they hail from, and submit a one-minute video that should convince “people around the world and the Mars One selection committee that you would be a great candidate to become one of the Mars One astronauts,” according to the organization’s website.

The journey to Mars is one-way because after a prolonged stay in a weightless environment, the human body will not be able to adjust to the higher gravity of Earth upon return, according to Mars One.

Applicants so far come from across the globe, with the most coming from the United States (17,324), China (10,241), and the United Kingdom (3,581). Many of the applicants are younger than 40.

Anders, 51, an applicant from Sweden, said in his video:  ”I often fantasize to just get on board a spaceship and go, to explore the universe. I often get the feeling that I don’t belong here, but up there, in space.”

Katarina, 23, an applicant from the United States, said that she’s an adventurer and an explorer and grew up in a “sci-fi loving household.”

“I’ve always dreamed of being an astronaut and being able to explore new planets,” she said. “I want to go to Mars so I can learn so many amazing things, and share it with Earth to help inspire people to want to continue exploring space and push the boundaries of human knowledge and what we can achieve.”

There will be four selection rounds: during the first round the Mars One selection committee will move forward “the most committed, creative, resilient and motivated applicants,” said Dr. Norbert Kraft, Mars One chief medical officer.

Mars One leaders outlined what they are looking for in potential astronauts:

“Applicants need to be at least 18 years of age, have a deep sense of purpose, willingness to build and maintain healthy relationships, the capacity for self-reflection and ability to trust. They must be resilient, adaptable, curious, creative and resourceful. Mars One is not seeking specific skill sets such as medical doctors, pilots or geologists. Rather, candidates will receive a minimum of eight years extensive training while employed by Mars One. While any formal education or real-world experience can be an asset, all skills required on Mars will be learned while in training.”

After receiving all the applications (online submission is possible through Aug. 31, 2013), regional reviewers will select around 50-100 candidates from different regions on Earth for Round 2.

The selection process will end in 2015 with 28-40 candidates, who will train for the one-of-a-kind mission for around seven years. On the first mission, slated to take off in 2022 and arrive in 2023, four astronauts will launch. Other groups of four will follow every other year.

The first mission is slated to cost about $6 billion and the organization is looking for a round of funding to pay potential suppliers to do conceptual design studies, so it can better calculate costs.

Application submissions can be made here.

There is a lot of talk about this, even in my rural little village. It’s got a strange buzz about it all. Very interesting. But the thing that concerns me is there is no infrastructure on Mars, and even though you are there for life and have many things to survive, you are still dependent on Earth. What if disease or war decimate the population and the communications and you were cut off, for years, or indefinitely. That would be tough. And it would be tough enough already.

I’ll sign up but have one and only one condition. Obama must stay here on Earth.

      • Confederate

How about we send Obama & the dumb-o-crats on a one way trip to Mars & we stay here! Oh & the ship has enough food, water & oxygen to last one person one year!

What did the Martians ever did to you to deserve a fate worse than death?

    • enforcer666

I’m sure NASA wants these people poking about up there, just looking at basic evidence shows at some point there was and could still be life on Mars, this mission will be lucky to leave the earths atmosphere in one piece

They want staff to clean their toilets.

“The journey to Mars is one-way because after a prolonged stay in a weightless environment, the human body will not be able to adjust to the higher gravity of Earth upon return, according to Mars One”.

Obviously Mars One has not been paying attention to space travel over the past 40 years. Valeri Vladimirovich Polyakov spent 14 months on the Mir space station & recovered fully!

      • Sebastian Clouth

Yeah I thought about that too but they’re saying “prolonged” as in a lot longer than 14 months–as in, many, many years. They don’t want people to go up there and think they have an “out” to go back home if things get touch, I gather by reading their website.

    • raveritte

ahh…no way. Looks like it would be more of a prison for me, and there is no plant life, no trees no rain, snow or lakes or rivers. no..not I. but space station is more what i would like. in space where planet life is not to be expected. I would rather live on the Enterprise…yes, that would be nice trip if you ask me.

      • Sebastian Clouth

True, it does seem like a prison type environment, plus they’ll have cameras everywhere broadcasting pretty much your every move = no privacy!

    • retiredpatriot

LOL i think ill stay here on the earth for if god wanted me to fly he would have given me wings if he wanted me to live on mars i would have been born there. Yeah i like everything here and i can further mankind by staying where i was intended to stay. These people who are going either have screws loose or when they get there will freak and freak some more when they change their minds.. lol its a death trip in my words. Maybe some monks would like to go they love solitude.

      • szamir

yeah, and if god wanted you to be open-minded, he would have made you so. what year of medivales ages are you stuck in? honestly, I am sick and tired of people posting such dumb bs all over the internet. my eyes hurt.

and what if god did not give you wings and did not want you to live on mars so that one day you can progress and excel yourself and do those things on your own? I encourage you to cross that boundry.

      • Anonymous

Yeah, your gods do want you to catch one of the many viruses that your gods created. Right? You cannot pick and choose which of your gods creations to accept, sorry.

    • kdc0521

I’m guessing that the people who settle there plan on making some kind of station like Mission to Mars with a green house if that’s even possible. Still it would be very interesting.

      • ALICE

after about a week I would think total insanity would arise. it’s just me and this pod and I am bored. unwilling animals were the first subjects to all experiments, but willing humans? I think they know not what the agenda or undertaking is.

911 can’t get help on planet earth before many tragic events happen. who do they call for help in ANY emergency? haha.

        ridiculous.

        • ImprobabilityDrive

agenda of pushing big brother type reality (sick) show into space. sheep would love it and what money you can get out of imprisoned humans dying right on your eyes. what emotions, what a show

If you changed your mind, you might go mad. Then there is the fighting…humans don’t get along, they never have. There is the religious factor too, cultists arguing whose god is better, to the point of war, of course there could be murders, rape, and all the other activities humans enjoy. Life in house arrest on Mars would be a simple microcosm of human behavior on earth, except that you are a prisoner in a very small confined space, nowhere to go, nowhere to hide. It would be hell on Mars.

I believe it would turn into a bizarre horror story.

    • titus1fourteen

It would be pointless to try and create a civilized society on Mars as long the banker race still exist stamping blue hexagrams in everyones forehead and making them eat and drink their own reprocessed excrements.

    • Purple Mike

lol…the world will be left a lot smarter with 78,000 fewer idiots on earth.

      • Anonymous

Only 34-40 will be selected to go, doesn’t matter how many apply.

    • WindTherapy

I would do it in a heartbeat. Alot of the comments about how hard it will be, the potential for problems, fighting amongst the inhabitants, danger, etc., well that is a “duh” factor. The key will be in their selection. THey will have to investigate the candidates and evaluate their reasons, state of mind, personality traits, etc. to an extensive degree.

There are inherent risks with ANY adventure. And some of us feel the risks are worth the adventure! Dont know if I will be able to “make the cut” as I will be over 60 by the time the first people go, but I am damn sure going to give it a try. I have told my kids all their lives that if “little green men” ever came down and asked who wanted to go…. I am gone. And they know Mom is serious. This isnt little green men, but I am still there if I can make that cut! This IS the opportunity of a lifetime to push your own limits, be a part of furthering the human experience, exploring the unknown, and maybe make a difference for those who come after. And for this gal….. well worth the hard work, difficulties, sacrifices and risks!

      • Anonymous

“The key will be in their selection. They will have to investigate the candidates and evaluate their reasons, state of mind, personality traits, etc. to an extensive degree.”

Look at politicians, most of them are psychotic, warmongers, adulterers, pedophiles, thieves, liars, cheats, drunks, elitists, take your pick, and they are supposed to be exemplary people. Instead, they are decadent and perverted and worthless.
So if this is the state of politicians, why would you expect any screening program to weed out those unfit? Won’t work, in a confined space, there will be mental illness, fighting, power struggles, maybe murders, rape and all the other crimes seen on earth. It will be hell on mars.

    • Fleendar the Magnificent

I guess it would be better to die on Mars as a free person and also as a first explorer into a new frontier than to die on earth as a slave to the elites and the NWO.

      • Engineer

Let’s see! All applicants have to pay a registration fee, between $5 and $73. Let’s take half of that and times it by 78,000. So.. We have $35 x 78,000 = 2,808,000 Million Dollars. NICE RACKET! What’s next, A trip to Uranus. :?:

        • Anonymous

          No, a trip to Uranus.

        • Anonymous

It sounds like a scam…only 40 people max will be allowed to go, and sending 4 a year will have some of those waiting decades before they go. The rest lose their money.

    • stonecold68

I am a little concerned.Recently I viewed a documentary titled ‘Overlords of the UFO’-1976.A portion of it explains the effects of cosmic rays on the human brain. Here`s how it goes:FACT-
After 100 odd billion dollars spent for manned space flight by NASA,it has been determined that man is truly confined to this earth. The incredible secret concealed from the tax paying public by both NASA and it`s congressional master`s,is that man cannot participate in long space expeditions.NASA has scientifically verified and kept very quiet the fact that the unstoppable cosmic rays to which every astronaut has been exposed, destroys brain cells at the rate of 1% every 4 months.Since the neurons of the adult human brain do ‘NOT’ reproduce,a space expedition represents irreparable brain damage and would reduce the crew to ‘idiots’,in even the 8 years it would take to go to the nearest sun and return.NASA claims that the 13% loss of neurons would equal the brain damage sustained by an alcoholic. But NASA does not allow for increased intensity of cosmic ray bonbardment as the astronaut moves in space.NASA must now admit that man cannot travel far in space because of significant brain damage which he will undergo.

The ability to trust is the inability to be skeptical. I would be skeptical of every part and piece, which my life depends on.

      :!:

    • HamBurglar

Do they have hamburgers on Mars? If so I’m going!

      • Anonymous

Sure, freeze-dried burgers, delivered once every six years, one per customer. It will be a long time before the cows arrive.

    • Anonymous

Mars One, who the hell are they?
You would trust a private CEO with your life on Mars and no escape possible? What if the Mars One people are corrupt or doing evil experiments and you are the subject? What if they want to serve you on Mars, serve you for dinner. Maybe they are in cohoots with Moinsanto and they need subjects to test the effects of prolonged breathing of pesticides in a closed environment. Only a fool would put there life and trust in a private corporation that they know nothing about. And who says that one is allowed to fly to Mars.
      Scam alert.

      • Anonymous

What if the MarsOne management go bankrupt after there are already several people on Mars. They go bankrupt, dismantle the corporation, and cease all operations and leave you there to perish? it could happen.

    • twodads

I’ll go if they supplied a life time of beer, satalite TV for my footy and a room full of lovely ladies. I understand that it’s a big scarfice but I am willing to take one for all of man kind.

Before they make up their minds to go, they should spend say, three months in Saudi Arabia up on the Iraqui border. After my year there, I decided green is the prettiest color of them all, and I never, ever want to see a desert again.
