Sun unleashes historic and MASSIVE X20+ solar flare!
Approximately 3 hours ago, the sun belched out one of the largest solar flares ever recorded… an X20+ flare, however, details of the blast are still sketchy and forthcoming since the website that keeps track of space weather (www.spaceweather.com) is down and data still being analyzed. Fortunately for earth, the sunspot that produced the flare was not squarely facing us and so it will not be the much-hyped ‘killshot’, however, if we were in the line of fire, a blast of this magnitude and intensity would most likely knock out the power grid for 2-5 years. This blast is on the scale of the 1859 Carrington event, if not even stronger and that flare/CME managed to set telegraph wires on fire and shorted out communications globally for a period of time. A similar event today would mean disaster for our electronic infrastructure. With any luck, we will see some extraordinary and intense northern lights possibly as far south as Florida and Hawaii by Thursday night. Check this site for updates on this event:
Update as of 16:43 PM MST – upon coming back up, the spaceweather.com website has no mention whatsoever of the X20 flare, however, if you click their archives for May 14, it’s being reported on the left:

Even more strange is that I sent an e-mail to spaceweather.com about the X20 flare being reported and now nothing and got this e-mail message in return:
“Your message was deleted without being read on Tuesday, May 14, 2013 5:35:47 PM (GMT-06:00) Central Time (US & Canada)”. Strange.
Update as of 17:42 PM MST: the archive for May 14, 2013 no longer shows the report of an X20 flare, however, I did take a screenshot of it before it was removed:

At 21:51 UT, Monday 2 April 2001, active region 9393 unleashed a major solar flare. Now reclassified as at least an X20, it appears to be the biggest X-ray flare on record, most likely bigger than the one on 16 August 1989, also an X20 flare, and definitely more powerful that the famous 6 March 1989 flare which was related to the disruption of the power grids in Canada. The big explosion, which took place near the Sun’s northwest limb, hurled a coronal mass ejection (CME) into space – at a whopping speed of roughly 7.2 million km/h – but not directly towards Earth. The shock arrived at SOHO at 14:20 UT, as detected by the SOHO/CELIAS Proton Monitor, shown below

Hello,
We cannot speak for the spaceweather.com folks on what happened with their website, but I can confirm that there was NOT an X20 flare. When we measure X-ray flares, we measure out to the first decimal place (tenth). The flare was actually an X2.3, but some websites misplaced the decimal and recorded it as an X20+. Similarly, the flare previous to that was an X1.7, not an X17, as recorded erroneously by other websites.
