Keep Looking Up: Remembering Jack Horkheimer

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Jack Horkheimer, the “Naked Astronomer”, brought the cosmos into our living rooms every week. His enthusiastic take on the heavens was amazing (for its time). Jack created and hosted the legendary “Star Gazer” (formally Star Hustler) for an unprecedented 34 years (until his death in 2010) and the show is still in syndication to this day. Jack showed us where, when, and how to look for constellations and planets. he taught me a lot about astronomy and star gazing. He will be exremely missed….Keep Looking Up!

I remember back in the 1980′s when Jack had a contest of sorts for his Star Hustler show for viewer submitted images of Mars, which at that time was making a close approach to Earth and was therefore at its biggest and brightest. He was going to air the images and acknowledge the submitter(s) on his show.

I had (and still have) a Celestron C-8 Schmidt-Cassegrain scope and a Nikon film camera. I got busy trying to get some good images or Mars with it and one night when it was exceptionally clear and steady, got some pretty decent pics of the Red Planet. I submitted my images to Star Hustler and got notified sometime afterwards that Jack picked them for his show!

I was so proud when they aired. Still got the VHS tape of it somewhere. LoL! The article here reminded me of this and I just wanted to share my story.
