NASA To Capture An Asteroid And Redirect Its Path

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

NASA released new photos and video animations depicting the agency’s planned mission to find, capture, redirect, and study a near-Earth asteroid. The images depict crew operations including the Orion spacecraft’s trip to and rendezvous with the relocated asteroid, as well as astronauts maneuvering through a spacewalk to collect samples from the asteroid.

Part of President Obama’s FY 2014 budget request for NASA, the asteroid initiative capitalizes on activities across the agency’s human exploration, space technology and science programs. NASA is enhancing its ongoing efforts to identify and characterize near-Earth objects for scientific investigation, and to find potentially hazardous asteroids and targets appropriate for capture and exploration.

The agency is creating an asteroid mission baseline concept to develop further in 2014 to help engineers establish more details about the mission. Meanwhile, engineers and scientists across the agency continue to evaluate several alternatives, as well as ideas from the public, for consideration throughout mission planning.

The asteroid initiative will incorporate advanced solar electric propulsion technology as a power source for spacecraft, offering greater flexibility to the spacecraft and mission planners. The mission also leverages the agency’s progress on the Space Launch System rocket, Orion spacecraft and other cutting-edge technology developments.

In late July, NASA conducted its asteroid mission formulation review, which brought together agency leaders from across the country to examine internal studies proposing multiple concepts and alternatives for each phase of the mission, and assessed technical and programmatic aspects of the mission. Currently, NASA is assessing the more than 400 responses received to a request for information in which industry, universities and the public offered ideas for the initiative.

The agency will host a technical workshop at the Lunar and Planetary Institute in Houston from Sept. 30 to Oct. 2 to discuss those responses and the potential for ideas from them to be incorporated into the mission concept. Virtual participation will be available to the public. Participation details will be provided prior to the event.

Artist’s Concept of a Solar Electric Propulsion System:  Using advanced SEP technologies is an essential part of future missions into deep space with larger payloads. The use of robotics and advanced SEP technologies like this concept of an SEP-based spacecraft during NASA mission to find, rendezvous, capture and relocate an asteroid to a stable point in the lunar vicinity offers more mission flexibility than would be possible if a crewed mission went all the way to the asteroid.

      Fake photos, fake information, NASA.

And I suppose that all the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, and Shuttle missions are fake, too? Really, the ignorance and stupidity of all you yahoos astound me. Let me borrow a quote from Robert Heinlein, ” It seems to me the human race should have been bred for intelligence, rather than longevity”. I was there for three Apollo launches, and eventually two Shuttle launches – these MANNED spacecraft had to go SOMEWHERE. Why spend the money to send people into space just to do nothing? If anything, we should be spending MORE money on NASA and commercial spaceflight, rather than wasting it on foreign countries that take the money to line their pockets and let their people starve. Eventually, we will be mining the asteroids to supplement our Nation’s need for industrial metals, instead of depending on fickle foreign countries for our needs.
Time for you types to come down from your caves and see what the real world is like.

Oh, and by the way, commercial spaceflight will produce more information, and make the mining of the asteroids completely possible long before NASA produces much more towards those goals. Nasa is as ancient as the B-29 and the Conelrad system compared to the commercialism of space by private companies. With the new drive systems being developed by Burt Rutan, and others like him, Neptune may only be a three day trip away, instead of NASA’s six month trip. Get your heads out of the sand, and your butts on the ground and do the research like I did. Realize this: your grandchildren may be spending vacations on the Moon before the end of the Century for about the same cost as a vacation in Acapulco. Your children may be spending their retirement years living a longer life on the moon (lesser gravity is MUCH easier on the heart). Terra forming Mars is already possible with the technology we already have. Your narrow minds are just a block to spread mankind amongst the planets, and eventually, the stars.

every other movie right now is an end of the world movie ~ world war z, end of the world, The world’s end, seeking a friend for the end of the world, etc etc etc ~

and now while we have a black president (morgan freeman) we watch the movie armageddon play out in reality.

if they cant lasso the “practice asteroid” are they going to admit ISON, or some other hurtling rock, etc is headed our way some time soon? sure seems odd that there have been SO many end of the world movies the last two years while discussion of an east coast tsunami, dames’ kill shot, biblical prophecy, last pope, last president, hidden imam prophecy, East coast FEMA drills and warnings, all seem to be lining up – RIGHT NOW.
