Comet ISON on October 7, 2013

Here is my first image ever of Comet ISON. I’ve been wanting to shoot some images of it and I finally got a chance. Weather was perfect. The only thing was I had to cut down a small tree in my yard the afternoon before shooting this to get a clear spot.
This was taken with an 85mm, F/5.6 Televue TV-85 APO refractor and a modified Canon T3 DSLR. Tracking was on the stars, but I aligned the sub-images on the comet before stacking them to make this image. That is why the stars are streaked/elongated.

I have about 24 good sub-images that need processing and stacking. The first 14 were used to make this quick and dirty image so I could see what I had. I hope to use all of the data and make an image with the stars as points and not streaked plus get the comet frozen in position (a star-freeze image.) Its a few hours work, though. Hopefully, I’ll get that done tonight after work and be able to update the image above with a better version.
Edit:
Here is the updated image with more time and processing to eliminate the star streaks:

It sure looks like a regular old comet but why are we not seeing Mars in your picture?
Mars is down below and a little to the left just out of the frame. My field of view was not big enough to fit it in there. If I turned the camera to a portrait orientation I could fit both in there, however. I might do that before the comet and Mars get too far apart.
Very nice! Thanks for the b-day gift – just what I wanted, too! Hope you post more as it nears.
Great job! Thanks for posting this!
Brilliant. Nicer than looking at the official photos on the internet.
Not getting to see it down here in the Southern Hemisphere – so thanks for sharing your pic.
Thank you for your considerable effort, InLikeFlint, fantastic result and best i’ve seen. Here’s hoping it puts on a good show after rounding our star.
How’s the Draconid meteor shower working out up your way?
Thanks, everyone.
Chituali, thanks. At least you had a chance to see Comet McNaught in 2007 when it was at it’s best and we couldn’t see it here in the northern hemisphere. So, I guess this time it is our turn. But, I doubt very seriously ISON will be anywhere close to Comet McNaught’s great performance.
Mayhem, thanks for the kind words. I looked for the Draconids, but I only saw one meteor fly from that area in almost 3 evenings of observing. I guess they were a bust, as usual.
