Comet Lovejoy Is The Real Show Now. Comet ISON is Dead or Dying!

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

All this hype for Comet ISON and look what happened to it.  It didn’t make it around the Sun without being unscathed and now its just a ghost of its former self.   There is no chance to see it naked eye again and if we get any additional images of it, it will probably be just a wisp of smokey debris that is barely visible.  But, you can still see a comet naked eye in the sky right now despite the bad news above.

Comet Lovejoy (C/2013 R1) is now at its best and brightest.  Its easy to find in the morning sky and binoculars are all you need to see it.  If you live where it is really dark, you don’t even need that.

Comet Lovejoy on Nov 30, 2013.  40×30 sec @ ISO 3200, Canon 200mm Telephoto at F/2.8, Canon T3.

Above is one of my latest images of Comet Lovejoy taken with a telephoto lens.  This is the view of it rising from behind the trees in the early morning just before sunrise in the northeast sky.   If you want to see a real comet, get up early have a look at Comet Lovejoy.  It is definitely worth it.

Good luck and clear skies to you!

I wouldn’t count ISON as ‘out’ just yet.
There are frames missing on the stereo and COR2.

Thanks for the update on Lovejoy, great pics.

Yeah, I wouldn’t count ISON out yet either. Anybody know why Encke has had no Media coverage? (not that mainstream media is mentioning anything of any of these comets that isn’t a load of rubbish)

      Great pics too, btw.

Won’t be much longer before this comet, Lovejoy, is gone from view. Worth a look as it rushes off to somewhere we know almost nothing about. Bye by comet.

      Great pictures thank you

      Thanks, everyone.

The view of Comet Lovejoy is great right now, but like Mayhem says, it won’t be too much longer before it is gone, so if you want to see it, now is the time. I’d say you have about a week to catch it naked eye and until the next full moon for binoculars and telescopes, which is 2 weeks from now. After that, it will be still be visible, but much dimmer than now.

As of today, Dec 2nd, 2013, ISON is fainter than 8th magnitude, according to Spaceweather.com. There’s no hope of observing it in the predawn sky with any twilight in the sky whatsoever. Dec 7th would be about the day it might be high enough to see at that brightness, but it will have probably faded to an even dimmer magnitude by then. Like I already said, ISON is dying and there’s not much left to see or photograph.
