Social Media Accreditation Opens For Launch Of OCO-2 Earth Science Mission

NASA is inviting social media users to apply for credentials to cover the launch of the agency’s Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2) — the second of NASA’s five Earth science missions to launch in 2014.

OCO-2 is scheduled to lift off at 2:56 a.m. PDT July 1 from Space Launch Complex 2 at Vandenberg Air Force Base (VAFB) in Lompoc, California.

A maximum of 70 social media users will be selected to attend the two-day event on June 30 and July 1, and will be given the same access as news media in an effort to align the experience of social media representatives with those of traditional media.

NASA Social media accreditation for the OCO-2 launch opens Thursday, May 15. International social media users without U.S. citizenship must apply for credentials by 2:00 p.m. PDT on Friday, June 6. Social media users with U.S. citizenship must apply for credentials by 2:00 p.m. PDT on Friday, June 13, to qualify. All social media accreditation applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

NASA Social participants will have the opportunity to:

- View the launch of the United Launch Alliance Delta II rocket

- Hear first-hand accounts by the OCO-2 science and engineering teams

- Get a behind-the-scenes tour of Vandenberg Air Force Base

- Meet fellow space enthusiasts who are active on social media

- Meet members of NASA’s social media team

All sites on VAFB are subject to closure due to mission requirements

On launch day, NASA Social participants and their friends and families will be invited to a special public viewing area to watch OCO-2 achieve orbit aboard a United Launch Alliance Delta II rocket.
