"Solar Eclipse" to Plunge UK into Darkness- This Happens as UN Declares 2015 the Year of “Light!” The Irony!

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

The United Kingdom power supplies could be plunged into darkness when an eclipse of the sun arrives March 20th. Experts warn that 90% of the sun’s rays will be blocked and that it  could cause blackouts in the area. Additionally 85% of the sun’s rays will be obscured in London and the South East and up to 95% in Scotland. The eclipse is expected to last two hours.

According to the European Network Transmission System Operators for Electricity

“The risk of incident cannot be completely ruled out. Solar eclipses have happened before but with the increase of installed photovoltaic energy generation, the risk of an incident could be serious without appropriate countermeasures.”

The irony is that this is also the year the UN has declared as the “Year of Light”...

so why is the power around the country ok at night then is that not the same but longer with out the SUN ????

    • Norry

This makes no sense at all. I believe this to be a small print footnote to cover themselves against litigation.

Installing photovoltaics to reduce the electricity financial load seems to be where this BS problem has arisen from.

Like has been stated, there is no sun at night either so that is when England is plunged into darkness.

Total eclipses last a very short time. This story of yours is just STUPID.

WTF?? When is March 200th? Oh, the irony! A click whore who doesn’t even proofread their headlines! LOLOLOLOLOL!!!

As someone else said, this is nonsense. Solar power systems have batteries to store energy to get us through night, overcast periods, rain, snow, etc. (BTW I am an engineer who has worked on solar power systems design). I might add that night can last 8-10 hours and you do not have a power blackout every night. To add to this, total eclipses of the sun have occurred many times in the past without any issues. I would strongly suggest that you have your articles vetted by someone who knows what they are talking about before you post them.

Ah, the sweet voice of reason! How refreshing to hear it ocasionally at BIN.
The UK generates about 1.5% of its total electrical power requirement from solar sources; thus it has very little reliance on this modality.

I live in the UK and the only thing that takes out the power is high winds knocking down trees, heavy rain storms, or lots of snow.but we will see but I very much dout the eclipse will do anything.!!!!!!

I live in the UK so lets see what happens ?
