ALERT: ASTEROID 2014-YB35, NASA CLASSIFIED AS “Potentially Hazardous Asteroid.”

Have you heard?

On March 27, 2015 we are going to be having a close call with 500 meter wide asteroid, named 2014-yb35. According to NASA the asteroid 2014-yb35 was visible on March 9th and will be up until March 30. It will be “potentially hazardous” at or about March 27th. I don’t normally pay that close to asteroids and or other space rocks, of sort, unless I see  “Potentially Hazardous Asteroids.” written next to them.  So, friends and readers, just keeping you posted. If you know how to read the numbers below, and would like to share any pertinent info within, please do.

Goldstone Radar Observations Planning: 2002 FG7 and 2014 YB35

Background

This is a planning page for asteroids 2002 FG7 and 2014 YB35 in March 2015.

2002 FG7
2002 FG7 was discovered on 2002 Mar 28 by NEAT. This object has an absolute magnitude
of 18.9, suggesting a diameter of roughly 500 m, but otherwise its physical properties are unknown.
This asteroid will approach within 0.05 AU on 2015 Mar 13 but will not be
observable by radar until March 17, when it enters the Goldstone declination window.
The radar SNRs are not high enough for imaging the target however we expect to obtain
continuous wave (CW) spectra. The bandwidth of the echo in the CW spectra combined with a size assumption
will provide an estimate of the rotation period of the asteroid. The circular polarization ratio
of the object will provide clues to the composition of the object.
We are scheduled to observe 2002 FG7 at DSS-14 on 2015 Mar 17.

Between Mar 11 and Apr 2 this object will be brighter than 17th magnitude
and reach an elongation of about 160 degrees during which optical lightcurves could be obtained.

2014 YB35
2014 YB35 was discovered on 2014 Dec 27 by the Catalina Sky Survey. It has an absolute magnitude of
18.9, suggesting a diameter of roughly 500 m, but otherwise its physical properties are unknown.
2014 YB35 will approach within 0.03 AU on 2015 Mar 27. It will get close enough to be
observed using Goldstone on Mar 09 and will be observable till Mar 30 after which it will exit
the Goldstone declination window to the south.
We are scheduled to observe this object on Mar 20 and we expect to obtain CW spectra
and coarse-resolution range-Doppler images.

The object will reach magnitudes brighter than 17 during mid-March when it could be a lightcurve target.

The Minor Planet Center has classified 2002 FG7 and 2014 YB35 as "Potentially Hazardous Asteroids."

Setups

We don't know what to expect for the bandwidth, so we're going to start with a standard CW setup:

CW setup:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
TX polarization RCP
RCV polarization LCP & RCP
Frequency hops: no hopping
Bandwidth: 4000 Hz
TXoffset +500 Hz
Sampling interval: 2500 x 0.1 usec
FFT for PFS files: 4000 for 1.0 Hz resolution

Ranging setups:

ncoh 1
bandwidth 787 Hz
resolution 12.3 Hz
TXOFF +100Hz (echo in bin 32 + 8 = 40)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
11-usec
baud 11 usec
