Bright Spots on CERES Resolved!

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

I am not a writer. I am a photo imaging hobbyist. I love to burn up a whole day
just downloading and "cleaning-up" NASA/JPL photos and combing through them for
surprises. I also used to enjoy the old game called "Where's Waldo" for similar
reasons....it's the thrill of the hunt, mostly, I think.

In any event, I have indeed found some surprises yet the biggest surprise of
all is that all that I can only categorize these surprises as "art". I've had to
accept that even though my fevered imagination may spy some extreme anomalies
in, say a NASA/JPL Mars photo, the truth of it is that EVEN NASA CANNOT call
their OWN photos "evidence". As it turns out, accepted rules of evidence require
an eye-witness to accompany any form of photo-evidence; an impossibility with
ALL of NASA's photos except for NASA's Moon photos. This is a good rule since,
after all, you and I cannot possibly know what has transpired between the time a
NASA a photo is taken and the time it is actually downloaded to our home
computer. Photo files can be hacked and so until the long-awaited day that NASA
actually announces an anomaly in one of their photos, one can only call these
anomalies unidentified "art". Even with such a NASA announcement, these photos,
again, can never be considered legal evidence without an eye-witness as
mentioned.

Having said that, I present to you this piece of NASA "Art". This is what my
little lap-top and Paint Shop Pro software managed to interpolate from the May
4th photo of CERES when the DAWN spacecraft was still 8400 miles away. Yes! DAWN
was Eight-Thousand four hundred miles from CERES when this photo was taken which
makes this photo all the more amazing when one considers that this photo
exhibits street-level resolution. Although NASA only admits to a packing a 66
meg CCD camera with a 150 mm lens on their DAWN spacecraft, apparently it's
enough to zoom down to street level at over eight thousand miles away! Of
course, NASA offers no sense of scale in these photos so, it's possible that
these objects are just very large. There's just no way to know without a
distance scale.

My imaging methods are simple and were all learned from the "help" section of
my Paint Shop Pro software and can be duplicated by anyone with imaging
software. The heart of my restoration process is, firstly, to make as small a
"crop" as possible. For some unknown reason, noise is greatly lessened by
minimizing the size of these NASA photo out-takes. Next I simply raise the
resolution (using the "bi-cubic" method) over several steps while controlling
all "levels", focus and noise. NASA posts their photos at a paltry 72 pixels per
inch. One must slowly raise this "PPI" to 1440 PPI and higher to even approach
their original resolution.

My fondest hope is that SOMEONE with some time and imaging software will
duplicate my efforts and indeed verify that this "art" is indeed there and can
be duplicated at will.

In any event, I hope you enjoy this unidentified NASA "Art" while remembering
that art is in the eye of the beer-holder! :)
