Falsified: Mars Rocks in Gale Crater

The puzzle: “Curiosity, up there on Mars, is finding absolutely nothing but sedimentary rocks that still have a basaltic composition. It’s kind of mind-boggling. It shouldn’t be happening (based upon our understanding of Earth geology), so clearly there is something here that is not at all like Earth.” (quoted from the last fifth paragraph in http://www.planetary.org/blogs/emily-lakdawalla/2014/10231731-gsa-2014-the-puzzle-of-gale.html )

Puzzle solved: The “sedimentary rocks” in Gale Crater, Mars are not natural rocks at all. They include artificially made concrete that is like Roman concrete.

Reasons for the claim: 1. Those objects on Mars contain basaltic composition in “sedimentary rocks” (note 1); 2. Mars broke basalt into basaltic grains through mechanical rather than chemical weathering and the Martian objects formed quite fast, with the water going away very quickly (note 2); 3. The objects lie in a dry lake that was once filled with water for millions of years. 4. The Martian objects are dominated by volcanic material like Roman concrete (see the next three paragraphs). 5. “The Romans made concrete by mixing lime and volcanic rock. For underwater structures, lime and volcanic ash were mixed to form mortar, and this mortar and volcanic tuff were packed into wooden forms. The seawater instantly triggered an exothermic chemical reaction. The above-mentioned lime (CaO) can be found in volcanic ash (Ref. 1). The above-mentioned tuff is a volcanic rock made of volcanic ash. Volcanic ash and mechanically broken volcanic rock grains dominate the Martian objects in Gale Crater (notes 2, 3). Their composition is “a simple mix of two endmembers: chunks of broken-up basalt, and a finer-grained material that looks like the ash you’d get from explosive eruptions of very iron- and magnesium-rich komatiites.” (note 3).

Volcanic material on Mars falsifies “mudstones and sandstones” in Gale Crater (note 4). Listed below are specific volcanic minerals that dominate the 15 “rocks” drilled and analyzed by Curiosity rover:
1. Volcanic minerals that dominate the five “sandstones” drilled by Curiosity rover are:Plagioclase, pyroxene, magnetite. (see the fourth paragraph of http://meetingorganizer.copernicus.org/EGU2017/EGU2017-10808.pdf).

2. Volcanic minerals that dominate the ten “mudstones” drilled by Curiosity rover are:Feldspar, Mafic Igneous Minerals, Magnetite, Crystalline Silica (Tridymite). (See chart in

In addition to volcanic minerals, Martian “rock” samples also contain 30% to 75% X-ray amorphous material (volcanic glass, organics, etc.). Examples:

The above indicates the Martian objects are like Roman concrete.

Note 1: “There are two main unifying points to the Curiosity results I saw at GSA. First: Every rock that Curiosity has seen is sedimentary. Second: nearly all of those sedimentary rocks have the bulk composition of an igneous rock called basalt. Note 2: “But there’s still the pesky problem of having rocks made of very fine-grained sediments that ought not to have a basaltic composition, because the very water that is required to transport, deposit, and lithify sediments into rocks should’ve also attacked the basaltic minerals and turned them into something else — a fact that Allan Treiman emphasized in his presentation on Curiosity CheMin results. That’s telling us something important, too. For one thing, Allan said, it suggests that the way that Mars turned basaltic lava rock into sediments was not through the action of water — that Mars broke basalt into basaltic grains through mechanical rather than chemical weathering. The entire Mars adventure is falsified. You would have to actually go there in order to truly know this, and nobody has ever penetrated the dome. We don’t know what’s beyond that. Look at the videos recently of Obummer and NASA scientists talking about someday going beyond LEO (low earth orbit). These articles are for people who still play with action figures and like to pretend.
