An introduction to the Rogues Gallery of Egyptian Secret Service agents, giving an overview of the history and purpose of the series.

The Egyptian SSIS, or State Security Investigation System, was the organisation that former president Hosni Mubarak used to hold onto his power. These criminals arrested anyone they liked and for any reason at all. They tortured people, and sometimes, made them disappear. Those people are probably buried out in the desert in an unmarked grave, their families still unsure of what became of their loved ones.

These agents were an instrument of terror for anyone who did not like the regime under Hosni Mubarak, and are guilty of some serious crimes against humanity. Now that Mubarak has gone, there is a danger that these people will get away with their crimes.

Hossam of www.arabawy.org found these photographs of SSIS agents when he was with the group that stormed the SSIS facility in Nasr City. There he found 2 discs full of these mugshots and decided to put them up on flickr. The Egyptian Temporary Military Government ordered Flickr to take the images down, which they duly did. Internet censorship is alive and well, even in the Land of the Free.

So he came to Anonymous for help, as well as myself (I often observe Anonymous out of journalistic interest), and AnonLeaks along with Anonymiss decided to help. So Hassam removed all pictures involving the families of agents and made new zip archives of these photos and hosted them up at a private location that only a few of us know about. Both Anonymous and Anonymiss have been disseminating these photos, and in the meantime I have also been sorting through them, making smaller copies, and posting them here.

Hence the series of Rogues Galleries that you now have access to.

Hopefully, those in Egypt who have legal claims against certain agents can find out who they are and lodge formal complaints with the authorities, whether the military, the civil law courts, or with international bodies like the Hague. Those former or serving SSIS personnel who tortured or murdered Egyptian civilians must be brought to justice, and if my hosting of their mugshots can help in any way, then so be it.
