Glenn Greenwald to Name American Targets of NSA Spying
Journalist Glenn Greenwald told the press he is ready to reveal a list of Americans the NSA targeted for surveillance. The 47-year-old whistleblower promises this will be his most extensive release yet of classified materials.
The National Security Agency has been the center of a series of controversies from revelations of domestic spying. Greenwald has spent 11 months releasing documents obtained by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden.
The journalist asked, “One of the big questions when it comes to domestic spying is, ‘Who have been the NSA’s specific targets?’ Are they political critics and dissidents and activists? Are they genuinely people we’d regard as terrorists?”
Greenwald also told the press the spy agency was unable to detect Snowden taking documents, and still do not know which reports were intercepted.
Snowden first contacted the journalist after obtaining 1.7 million documents, many of them classified. These reports detailed a massive spying network around the United States and the world.
The list is due to be published on The Intercept, a new online media outlet Greenwald joined after leaving The Guardian newspaper.
Recently, documents revealed the federal government is recording all phone calls made in the Bahamas, including those of Oprah Winfrey. Wikileaks recently released the identity of a second country where the same program is in full operation — Afghanistan.
Greenwald is describing the upcoming release as a “finale,” but the news may not be welcome to the national spy agency.
The journalist hinted, “As with a fireworks show, you want to save your best for last. The last one is the one where the sky is all covered in spectacular multi-colored hues.”
Soon, we will see the most damaging of all the intercepted NSA documents. The effects of this historic release remains to be seen.
