DO THE GOSPELS TEACH US TO HATE?
My personal bias is that a statement in the Bible is never ‘wrong’ or a ‘later addition’ or such like. When something rubs us the wrong way and seems ‘off’ (like this verse), we have to look harder for the inner hidden meaning behind the words. What do they symbolize and really mean?
Whoever comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and even life itself, cannot be my disciple. (Luke.14.26)
It seems peculiar, perhaps even horrifying, that Jesus, who emphasizes love, would tell his disciples that they must hate their loved ones if they want to follow him. But what does the concept of ‘hatred’ really signify in this context? The story is symbolic and internal, and Jesus is not telling his disciples (or you or I) to literally treat family members with hatred or contempt. He is teaching his disciples that all inner emotional ties that bind the soul to earth will have to be relinquished – not just the love of money and comfort, but even the love of friends and family. These downward-pulling ‘loves’ must be renounced (which in mythological language is often symbolized as a transformation of ‘love’ into ‘hatred’) so that new emotional ties can be created that will bind the soul with the ‘Above’. Ultimately, everything must be relinquished, even the pleasures of the contemplative and spiritual life, even one’s gratitude for the bliss of Divine Light. There cannot be the slightest sweetness left, for this would continue to separate the soul from God as it identifies with its own ecstasy. The soul must have nothing, it must become nothing, so that it can have and be only God.
But this is not to say that these people must literally be renounced. In fact, if we recall Christ’s teaching on conscious love, we see that these emotional ties are not conscious, and it is only by severing these unconscious bonds and awakening to the Christ Consciousness (Nous), that it at last becomes possible to truly love our fathers and mothers, husbands and wives, sons and daughters, brothers and sisters. Otherwise, we are just patting ourselves on the back about how ‘warm and loving’ we imagine we are, while really just being sentimental, and demanding that they love us.

Nice piece, definitely helps paint a picture differently than most would try to attribute it today. Its as if people generally like accepting the most elementary viewpoint. Through a process of deductive reasoning, I have come to a similar view on it as you . May God bless you brother.
The gospels that made it into the bible are by anonymous authors, there was no Mathew Mark Luke and John, and they are older than the Christian story time line. Which means the Christian claim is complete BS, all the historical characters they claim, eg Herod, were not born when the gospels were written.
They are Mithraic in origin, from the state religion enforced on Rome by the totally insane despot Roman emperor Constantine. 4th century CE. Later taken over by Catholicism on the basis Mithraic cults used the cross eg. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d2/Dionysus_Crucifixion.gif
Judaism was invented by the Pharisees a group of wealthy influential BANKERS and TRADERS after 70 CE. After Rome wiped the polytheistic Israelites off the face of Earth in 70 CE. Jesus, if he existed could not possibly have been Jewish, Judaism didn’t exist when he was living.
Catholicism is based on the letters attributed to the Turkish TRADER, Pharisee Saul/Paul. 6th to 10th Century CE.
Islam is based on the teachings of the TRADER Muhammad. 7th century CE.
Protestantism was created in the 16th century CE, eg, the Church of England by King Henry 8th because he wanted a divorce to get an male heir.
The reason why women are property of men in all three religions because women are compassionate, compassion is bad for profit.
What’s to believe exactly, a load of manipulative codswallop invented by bankers and traders? I wouldn’t trust a banker or a trader to piss on me if I were on fire.
It’s interesting though that you have brought up the contradiction of having to both love everyone and hate everyone at the same time. Jesus gave 8 essential criteria for entry into heaven.
1. Luke 10:25-28 Love everyone
2. Luke 18:18-22 Sell everything
3. Luke 14:26-33 Hate everyone/thing, sell everything
4. John 6:53-54 Eat flesh, Drink blood
5. Matthew 18:2-3 Be a little child
6. John 3:3-8 Be a born again infant
7. Matthew 5:17-20 Practice all 613 OT laws
8. John 3:16 Believe in Jesus.
It’s clear, one needs to be anal in obeying invented man made laws created by bankers and traders, (good bit of predicting there seeing as those laws are the invention of the Pharisees, created after his death) property less, schizophrenic, flesh eating, blood drinking infant to qualify for heaven.
