Pagan Eye: Mistletoe Growing on an Apple Tree

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

I photographed this apple tree laden with mistletoe at the top of the meadow at Chalice Well Gardens, in Glastonbury, when I visited a couple of weeks ago. I don’t think I have ever seen so much mistletoe on a tree before!

As I understand it, mistletoe doesn’t harm the tree it grows on, but even so I couldn’t help wondering what all that extra weight was doing to the branches. Nevertheless, it was an amazing sight. I sat under tree on a bench and enjoyed the view over the gardens in a brief spell of early spring sunlight before those grey clouds you can see in the picture rolled over.

My Pagan Eye posts show photos that I find interesting – seasonal images, pagan sites, events, or just pretty pictures. If you want to send me a photo for a Pagan Eye post, please email it to [email protected]. Let me know what the photo shows and whether you want your name mentioned or not. Interesting, that’s a really old apple tree that was once pollarded, probably as part of a hedge, but has subsequently been left to do it’s own thing. I’ve seen similar old apple trees in old estates all over Europe.

I often wonder if the mistletoe was introduced to the apple trees by humans, this is not the first mistletoe festooned apple tree I’ve seen, the are loads of them in walled gardens and estates. They perhaps were growing their own mistletoe for their winter solstice festivities, it’s traditionally a pagan theme.
