Why the Taboo Over Older Women in Urban Fantasy?
A friend has just shown me an article saying that having an older female protagonist is a big taboo in modern urban fantasy.
While I recognise that younger men are traditionally the heroes in pretty much all fiction, I was a bit surprised at older women protagonists being such a taboo in modern urban fantasy novels. After all, surely the witch figure is often an older woman? Terry Pratchett’s Granny Weatherwax made a fine protagonist in his not-so-modern fantasy Discworld novels, so why the taboo in books set in the modern day?
What do you think? Let’s get a discussion going.

I have no problem with ‘older women’. My only issue is, that by the time the term ‘cougar’ was coined, I was already old enough to be a lot of them’s dad anyhow.
Now, were I to search for ‘older women’ (and them actually be older than me), I’d have to cruise the geriatric ward at local convalescent homes. Sad to say, every time I see a photo with the word ‘cougar’ smittenly posted at the bottom, I grimace and think to myself, ‘yeah, 20 years ago, I was her age and would have most-likely asked her out’.
I’ve been to ‘Cougar Town.’
It has it’s ups and downs. In my early twenties (before I married) I dated a couple of men who were significantly older than me. One who wanted to ‘help’ me through college and control my every decision and movement. I only went out with him twice.
The second was my keyboard player in the band. He was 33, hung steel for a living and was ready to fight just a minute ago. But he could play the most beautiful music……and we could walk into any bar……anywhere and sit down at a piano and both earn our rent in tips……and all our drinks for free. He never failed to keep me safe, open doors, light cigs, or any of the other things my dad taught me a man should do.
Now, I get asked out by younger guys who have speakers that thump for ten miles before they reach the house, can’t drive a manual, have never heard of Jeff Beck, or don’t know that Blondie invented Rap music……They expect me to drive my car….cause it’s in better shape and has more gas, I’m supposed to pay for the date….cause I pull down more cash…..and they expect to be able to drink to drunkenness….because I’m driving.
Yeah…..young is cute to look at……from afar………waaaaaaaay far.
I prefer five years my senior all day long.
