Magic School: Folklore in England with Steve Roud

Starting on May 6, folklorist Steve Roud is running the first in a series of intermediate-level evening classes exploring the rich history of English folklore.

The six-week course is called Folklore in England: Level 2 and is being run as a series of evening seminars at Cecil Sharp House, in London. It is suitable for those who have already done the Folklore in England course at level 1, which was run last year, or have equivalent knowledge.

The course will explore customs and festivals, superstitions and beliefs, children’s folklore, narrative tales, legends, and domestic and personal lore. It is promoted by the English Folk Dance and Song Society (EFDSS). The seminars will be led by Steve Roud, an experienced folklorist who has been researching and writing the history of folk tradition for over 30 years. He is the creator of the Roud Folk Song Index, co-author of the A Dictionary of English Folkloreand co-editor The New Penguin Book of English Folk Songs.He has also written several books about English folklore, including The Penguin Guide to the Superstitions of Britain and Irelandand The English Year.

The classes run from 7pm – 9pm at English Folk Dance and Song Society, Cecil Sharp House, 2 Regent’s Park Road, London NW1 7AY. The fee is £66/£54 concessions. The first session is on Wednesday 6 May and the following dates are 13 and 20 May, then 3, 10 and 17 June
