Lived Thailand since 1997, Great place to retire, great beaches, A+ low cost health care in Bangkok (I can not say enough about how good the private hospitals and dental services are). You need about $2000 /month to live really well…if you need to rent a place.
My cost of living break down for 2 people:
$70 /month electric(large home) tropical climate.
$600 / month (3-4 meals a day for 2 people) eating out every day at local restaurants, and outdoor markets.
$50 / month bottle water for 2 people
$20 / month internet
$37 / month 2 cell phones
$12 / month car insurance
$150 / month on beer wine cokes & snacks just hanging out!
$140 / month just stuff tooth paste, cleaning , bath room tissue, soap, clothes…etc
$150 / month on entertainment, movies, trips, hotels, taxi / bus / trains
$110 / month diesel for car.
$200 / month for maid, laundry / house cleaning services 2 -3 days a week.
$250 – $600 / month rent depends on where you live, normally will includes water / trash & sometimes internet.
$900 / yr medical insurance 2 people (cost for 1 year not a month)
You can get most medicines without a prescription at the local pharmacies, and very low cost…some drugs you will need to see a doctor, public hospital emergency room was $3 last time I went to a public hospital last year. Medical insurance is cheap and you need to carry 75,000 baht coverage as a non-thai citizen which cost about $500 /yr per person just in case something serious happens, and you end up in a private hospital for a month or two…
A retirement visa requires you have 30K in a Thai Bank and a proven income of $1500 a month. You can not buy land or own a home on free hold land if you are not thai citizen, if you are married to a thai citizen then you can be on the deed, you will be limited to buying a condo or renting a place otherwise.
There are a couple rules that I know of that must be followed:
Rule #1 NEVER say anything NEGATIVE about the King or even move a poster of him!
Rule #2 Biggest vehicle has the right of way! (you will live longer)
Otherwise seems there are very few laws, low cost of living, no federal, state, sales taxes and no property taxes coupled with lower food, and health care cost which results in a disposable income increase of 67% annually.
Low crime rate, no PC police, beer & go-go bars run 24/7, food is great and cheap, beaches are awesome, always something to do!
Hey Jeffrey…some of those places I know and aren’t bad choices, but it’s apparent you don’t speak portuguese (you probably do speak a little Spanish, I would imagine?), otherwise there are a dozen places in Portugal I’d place over your choices in Spain, esp. along the coast in the Algarve, but also in the rest of Portugal. And it’s cheaper and safer than Spain. You ought to take a look. And BTW, there are a lot of English-speakers (many English) in the Algarve…or, of course, you could learn a little portuguese ‘-)
C,MON PEOPLE moms and dads basement should be first on the list. SHEESH!
