The Secret Language of the Heart
Barry Goldstein is a musical hybrid. He is a producer, songwriter, speaker recording artist and stage performer. His tunes and tones touch audiences world-wide as they reach beyond convention and grasp cosmic concepts. The intention is more than entertainment, but rather entrainment to a higher vibration. As is the subtitle of the book, entitled The Secret Language of the Heart, it is a tool for transformation.
Goldstein begins by admitting his love affair with music. As his career developed and he became a commercial success, performing with and producing some top ten musicians and part of the pantheon of transformational speakers and teachers, he was also aware of the need to connect the soul of his work with the literal physical heart.
He speaks of The Sacred Heartbeat Process, as a “simple but powerful meditative exercise by which you can learn to be more in touch with your heart. I like to use this process whenever I feel disconnected from my heart—especially if I have a big decision to make. Coming back to your heart and listening for its guidance can help you to have more clarity and less anxiety in the decisions you make because you are able to tap into your heart’s unique intelligence.”
From that launching point, he teaches the reader various breathing techniques that link the heart beat rhythm and the inhalation and exhalation that threads through each aspect of our lives. His contention is that such a bonding not only impacts on physical wellbeing, but mental, spiritual and emotional as well. Goldstein teaches The Heartsong Breathing Process complete with diagrams to assist. He speaks of the idea of coherence that connects us one to the other as music carries its own emotional flavor, some of which appeals to people differently as a result. He likens it to a special recipe concocted by a beloved grandmother, made that much more nourishing because of the loved poured into it.
Goldstein shares his ideas about what he calls ‘designer music,’ which is made to have a specific impact on the listener. When he began to compose his release called The Heart Codes, he set intention before each recording session: “My intention is that the music I am creating assists the listener in forming a deeper connection with their heart.” Before fingers touched keyboard, he set the tone both literally and symbolically.
A humorous anecdote that Goldstein offered had to do with the impact of his music on his Type A fiancée’ Donese who asked him to lower the volume since it was making her too relaxed and she couldn’t concentrate on her work.
He indicates the positive impact of music meant to heal:
- Less risk for stress-related illnesses, such as cardiac problems
- Improved cognitive abilities
- Enhanced immune function
- • Less anxiety
- • A stronger sense of inner peace
A nod to The Institute of Heart Math, founded by Doc Lew Childre, “The heart and brain maintain a continuous two-way dialogue, each influencing the other’s functioning. The signals the heart sends to the brain can influence perception, emotional processing and higher cognitive functions. This system and circuitry is viewed by neuro-cardiology researchers as a “heart brain.”
Various musical selection suggestions are offered for specific impact, such as inducing a state of gratitude, love and joy, as well as certain relaxing and anxiety reducing conditions.
Music also has a positive effect on the brain via:
- Emotion
- Memory
- Learning and Neuroplasticity
- Attention
He adds that there are a multitude of ways to get your brain on board through playing an instrument, chanting and drumming.
At another point, he evokes the idea that music has the power to bring us back to a certain moment in time in which we felt particular emotions, referencing a memory of his father singing the Rod Stewart song Maggie Mae. A playlist idea encourages readers to combine songs for the enhancement of their lives, as they use it to alter state of mind and emotion. Chakra balancing is a key in one of the closing chapters as Goldstein addresses various musical tones for each of the energy centers.
A sweetly poignant tale is that of Goldstein’s experience with his father as he lay dying in his hospital bed. He had the inclination to sing and chant for him. In the moments that this occurred, he saw his father transform from barely conscious to aware enough to hear that his son loved him and then he was able to transition peacefully.
Goldstein advises allowing music to be a companion throughout the day, incorporating it into arising, sustaining energy and winding down to sleep state.
He closes the book, speaking about the medicinal properties of music for conditions such as Alzheimer’s and ADHD, bereavement, grief, cardiovascular conditions, depression and insomnia and has recommendations for each one.
This treasure trove of tunes, tones and teachings will have you singing along to your own heart song.
