In the Bag 2013 with Paul Casey

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

From 3rd best golfer in the world to 169th in the rankings just three years later, Paul Casey’s fall from grace has been blighted by a lack of form, a lack of time and a number of injuries that have left the talented English golfer plummeting towards the lower ranks of the game.

However after last weeks impressive win at the Irish Open, can Paul now turn his career around and get back to the golf he is truly capable of?

Lets take a look at Paul’s career and what is in his bag for 2013.

Career Highlights:

Although he is yet to win a Major, Casey has won several top events on the tour and has performed very well in World Golf Championship events, including two second place finishes in the Accenture World Match Play in 2009 and 2010.

His biggest win came in May 2009, when he defeated Ross Fisher by a single stroke to win the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, a victory which saw him rise to 3rd in the World Rankings at this time.

Career Lowpoints:

Without doubt, Paul Casey’s lowest points in his career have been caused by injury. He’s been out of the game for months at a time after a catalogue of injuries, some cause by golf, some not, that have drastically reduced his effectiveness as a player.

These injuries took their toll on the player and in 2012, in a stretch of 15 events from the Transitions Championship through to the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, Casey missed 12 of 15 cuts and had to withdraw from the Players Championship with another injury. He finished 75th at the Wyndham and his best place was a tied 25th in the Ballantine Championship during this torrid period.

What does the future hold for Paul Casey?

After his lengthy time away from the game due to injury and his perilous slip down the world rankings, last weekend’s victory in the Irish Open will be a huge boost to Casey as he seeks to regain the form that once saw him as high as 3rd in the World Rankings.

Casey’s next step is to continue his improvement by continuing to make cuts and be in the final pairings of more tournaments over the course of the year. Breaking the top 100 should be a formality for this talented golfer, provided he can steer clear of the dreaded injury jinx that has blighted his career at times.

If he can, then Casey has the potential to be a top ten golfer once again and no doubt, Major titles and Ryder Cup qualification will be back on the horizon for this talented and softly spoken Englishman.
