In the Bag 2013 with Jordan Spieth

He began the 2013 season as one of a crop of talented rookies, a virtual unknown in the upper echelons of golf, however after one of the finest Rookie years on record, on a par with the likes of Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods first year as pro’s, Jordan Spieth is quickly making a name for himself on the PGA Tour.

A talented amateur player, this 20-year old native of Dallas, Texas has shot up the world rankings on the back of some outstanding performances in the 21 tournaments he has contested so far as a professional, winning once, finishing second twice and in the top ten on eight other occasions.

So good has Spieth’s season been that Fred Couples picked him for the US team for the 2013 President’s cup, ahead of veteran and no 15 in the world rankings, Jim Furyk.

Career Highlights:

Although this is his first year as a professional on tour, Jordan Spieth already has a highlight reel that would be the envy of many professional players who have played for considerably longer.

Certainly winning the John Deere Classic was a big moment for the youngster, but he has also enjoyed a stellar college and amateur career, playing a key role in the US Team at the 2011 Walker Cup and also was the lowest amateur when finishing 21st at the 2012 US Open.

A final round 62 at the Deutsche Bank Championship had playing partner Phil Mickelson texting US President’s Cup Team Captain Fred Couples “You gotta pick this guy”, which Couples duly did.

It is just the start of what promises to be a glittering career for the young Texan.

Career Lowpoints:

Spieth has yet to endure a truly torrid time in his golfing career, so his lowpoint may well have been the highpoint of the career of a lesser golfer. That came five weeks after his win at the John Deere when he lost a play off at the Wyndham Championships to finish second.

That win moved him up to 36th in the World Golf Rankings and since then he has moved into the top 30. A top ten place surely beckons.

What does the future hold for Jordan Spieth?

With some commentators feeling that Spieth is having arguably the second best ever Rookie season in golf (second only to John Daly, who won four events including a Major during his rookie campaign in 1991), the sky is the limit for this talented young American.

Certainly he will seek to perform well for America in the President’s Cup and success there will almost certainly lead to calls for his inclusion in the 2014 Ryder Cup team. Tom Watson however may not require a captains pick to select him if Spieth continues his rapid development as a player.

Lastly, winning more tournaments is obviously an aim for Spieth and Majors will form a key part of that. Whether he has the ability and dedication to turn a remarkable Rookie season into long term success as one of the world’s very best, time will tell.

But certainly so far, Spieth looks to have all the skills required to become one of the next great American stars of the sport.
