It is absolutely wrong to bring in fresh horses to a race that has already been through two races. All or nothing. Let’s level off the playing field and make things fair. I would like to request the NYRA -and all others involved make this a field of horses that are willing and able to go the whole nine yards. Steve is right. Millions of us out here are disappointed we did not receive the gift of a triple crown this year. We needed a horse to lift our spirits. We needed California Chrome to become a horse that we all could love-another great story like Seabiscuit. I have been so excited for weeks-now I not only feel let-down, but CHEATED. Change the rules-do what you gotta do. This story should have had a fairytale princess ending. No horses should be allowed to run in the last race that haven’t run in the first two-NO WONDER WE HAVEN”T HAD A TRIPLE CROWN IN WHAT-36 YEARS????!!!!!!!!!
Im not very interested in horse racing but i happened to watch it yesterday and when that guy was speaking i was just thinking “wait, some of those horses never ran in the other races?” I dont know how these races are laid out but i was under the impression it was tournament style and it shoulda been the top horses throughout all the races. Were they last minute replacements? If it was known that rested horses were gunna get to race, why didnt anyone speak up before the race?
Boo Hoo! Enough with this “fairness” horse manure, go back and do your research and you’ll see that triple-crown winners have always had to face “fresh horses” that sat out of the Derby and/or Preakness, it’s what makes the feat so impressive. In ’73 only 5 horses ran at Belmont, Secretariat and Sham who finished 1st and 2nd at the Derby and Preakness and 3 others; of those, 2 sat out of the Preakness and the other was a “fresh horse” having not run the first 2 legs. They raced because they thought they had a chance to beat Secretariat at the longer track and protect the crown, the horses that raced the previous races didn’t enter because they knew they didn’t stand a chance against Big Red and Sham. The triple-crown is a rare treasure that owners and trainers have foregone races and money to protect, if the rules are changed it will take the majesty away from the feat and put it on par with McGwire and Bonds’ HR records*
