PPR Breakout Candidate: Why The Colts’ Josh Ferguson Needs To Be On Radars

Being listed at 5’9″ likely had a lot to do with Illinois’ Josh Ferguson going undrafted this year. There could quickly be numerous teams disappointed with their decision to pass over him, however, as the rest of the league’s oversight could quickly become the Colts’ gain.

First of all, just look at the depth chart ahead of him. Frank Gore is the “leader”, though at 33-years old it’s fair to wonder when the gas tank will hit empty (and also how much the team will limit him in an effort to keep him healthy). Jordan Todman and Robert Turbin? Neither have proven anything in the NFL and are easy to imagine being passed over in favor of the explosive rookie.

Just look at how NFL.com described him prior to the draft, comparing him to Ronnie Hillman:

“Small and lean waterbug of a running back. Ferguson’s ability to change direction instantaneously and create explosive yardage as a runner or pass catcher could make him a dangerous weapon in the hands of the right NFL team. Ferguson has the hands and route running potential to be considered as a slot receiver option to go along with being a change of pace back.”

It’s impossible to imagine him garnering a significant number of carries, even if Gore were to get hurt, but he could easily become a force in the passing game. With Andrew Luck under center and the team now short a tight end, it’s easy to envision Ferguson becoming a favorite safety valve.

Remember, in 2014 Ahmad Bradshaw and Trent Richardson combined for 65 catches, 529 yards and 6 TD. Even if Ferguson didn’t absorb that entire workload, is 50+ catches that unrealistic? Considering he hit the 50 plateau in both 2013 & 2014 while in college, it really shouldn’t be.

In non-PPR formats it’ll be harder to justify stashing him, because the upside is likely limited to just a handful of carries per game. In PPR formats, however, he’s an easy late round stash. He could be the next Shane Vereen type running back, which is something no one wants to miss.
