Closer In Waiting Power Rankings: April 17, 2017: Neris Makes Jump, Next Up For Arizona & More
by Eric Stashin (aka The Rotoprofessor)
Are you someone constantly on the lookout for the next potential closer? That’s what we are trying to pinpoint here, with our Top 5 Closer In Waiting Power Rankings. These rankings look at the pitchers who appear capable of taking over their team’s respective closing duties (though in some cases, will need some help to get there). Keep in mind, if a pitcher is currently part of a committee they will not be included in these rankings (i.e. the Oakland A’s and Cincinnati Reds situations) despite not currently “holding” the job outright.
Without further ado, let’s take a look at how things stand:

Note
|
---|---|---|---|---|
1. | Matt Bush (4) | Texas Rangers | Sam Dyson | Dyson has taken the Shawn Tolleson route & Sunday’s recent blowup (regardless of how hard balls were hit) should spell the end for him as closer. With Matt Bush returning from an injury scare to strikeout the side, the change is coming in short order. |
2. | Koda Glover (2) | Washington Nationals | Blake Treinen | Treinen has shown cracks, including a poor outing on Sunday. It’s possible that the team gives Shawn Kelley the first opportunity, but Glover was thought to be the favorite in the preseason and has been the best of the three this season. |
3. | Hector Neris (NR) | Philadelphia Phillies | Joaquin Benoit | If the Phillies wanted Neris to get the role so badly they would’ve given him a chance before Benoit. Granted, if Benoit struggles they will be forced to give him a try, but one blown save won’t be enough to make it happen. That said, Neris has to be watched closely at this point. |
4. | Arodys Vizcaino (1) | Atlanta Braves | Jim Johnson | Johnson blew his first save & we all know that he’s not the future for Atlanta. One or two more poor outings could lead to Vizcaino, who has done the job before, being given another opportunity. |
5. | J.J. Hoover (NR) | Arizona Diamondbacks | Fernando Rodney | The problem in Arizona is that they don’t have a clear alternative, but Rodney’s struggles should ultimately lead to a change. for now it’s Hoover who could step in if needed, though Archie Bradley could be transitioned into the role. |
Dropped Off Rankings:
- Jaokim Soria (4) – Kansas City Royals – Kelvin Herrera is the better option and there are more unstable situations
- Kyle Barraclough (5) – Miami Marlins – Doesn’t look like he’s actually the next up at the moment, though he should be at some point
Others We’re Monitoring:
- Corey Knebel – Milwaukee Brewers
- Trevor Rosenthal – St. Louis Cardinals
- Luke Gregerson – Houston Astros
- Justin Wilson – Detroit Tigers
- Brad Hand – San Diego Padres
Injured Setup Men To Monitor:
- Jake Barrett – Arizona Diamondbacks
- Carter Capps – San Diego Padres
