Closer In Waiting Power Rankings: June 13, 2017: Doolittle/Bradley Among Setup Men To Watch
by Eric Stashin (aka The Rotoprofessor)
Are you someone constantly on the lookout for the next potential closer? That’s what we are trying to pinpoint here, with our Top 5 Closer In Waiting Power Rankings. These rankings look at the pitchers who appear capable of taking over their team’s respective closing duties (though in some cases, will need some help to get there). Keep in mind, if a pitcher is currently part of a committee they will not be included in these rankings despite not currently “holding” the job outright.
Without further ado, let’s take a look at how things stand:

---|---|---|---|---|
1. | Pat Neshek (2) | Philadelphia Phillies | Hector Neris | Hector Neris continues to struggle, though he’s thrown just 1.0 inning over the past week (1 R on 2 H and 1 BB). Still, the usage on Monday shows he’s still the closer (at least for now). While Joaquin Benoit worked the 8th, Neshek continues to be the team’s best RP and should be primed for save opportunities (at least until he’s traded). |
2. | Sean Doolittle (NR) | Oakland A’s | Santiago Casilla | He’s finally back, after missing nearly six weeks to the DL. After dominating during his rehab stint (3.0 perfect innings with 5 K), he returned to throw a perfect inning with 1 K in the Majors. Casilla has struggled at times, and also doesn’t have a track record of success. In other words, it’s only a matter of time before a change comes. |
3. | Keone Kela (4) | Texas Rangers | Matt Bush | Over his last four outings (3.2 IP) Bush has allowed 5 R (4 ER) on 7 H and 3 BB, yielding 3 HR in the process. Those are numbers that simply can’t be ignored, even though he still owns a 2.42 ERA and 1.25 WHIP on the season. You have to wonder if Kela had been in the Majors at the time that Sam Dyson ceded the role, if he would’ve gotten the first opportunity? It may only take one more poor performance from Bush for a change to be made, and Kela could finally get his opportunity at the role. |
4. | Arodys Vizcaino (NR) | Atlanta Braves | Jim Johnson | Johnson has 2 BSV over his past 8 appearances, and has allowed runs in three of his past eight (raising his ERA to 3.58). Granted he does own 30 K vs. 6 BB on the season, so it’s hard to knock him, but whether it’s due to struggles or a trade there’s a good chance Vizcaino gets an opportunity. As it is he’s been just as good, if not better, with a 2.08 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, 30 K and 9 BB on the season. He’s closed before and he will again. |
5. | Archie Bradley (NR) | Arizona Diamondbacks | Fernando Rodney | Rodney has been on a great stretch, though does anyone really expect it to continue? We watched him implode a year ago, and it wouldn’t be shocking to see him go through a similar stretch. When that happens Bradley should finally get his chance, as he’s been transitioned to a typical reliever role, working 1 inning at a time and multiple days in a role. Now that he’s shown he can thrive in the role, it’s only a matter of time. |
