Stock Report: How Far Has The Value Fallen For These Bigger Name Receivers?
by Eric Stashin (aka The Rotoprofessor)
Things are always changing in the NFL and therefore a players stock can waiver for a variety of reasons. Let’s take a look at two wide receivers whose name holds value, though their stock may be heading in the wrong direction:
Jarvis Landry – Wide Receiver – Cleveland Browns
We all knew the Browns were heading towards a coaching change, so it wasn’t a surprise when they made the move on October 29. What is surprising is the impact that the change has had on Landry, who has struggled in the three subsequent games:
- vs. Kansas City (11/04/18) – 6 receptions, 50 yards, 0 TD
- vs. Atlanta (11/11/18) – 2 receptions, 22 yards, 0 TD
- at Cincinnati (11/25/18) – 3 receptions, 30 yards, 0 TD
Prior to the change Landry had been targeted at least 10 times in seven of eight games, but since he’s been targeted 17 times total (and no more than 7 times in a game). Clearly there’s been a change, and while he is still going to be a viable option he is clearly no longer a locked in WR2. Think of him more as a WR3 in most cases and not a must start option.
Stock – Falling (WR3/No Longer Must Start)
Alshon Jeffrey – Wide Receiver – Philadelphia Eagles
Jeffrey was rolling initially upon his return, including scoring 4 TD in his first four games. However since then the numbers have been fairly unusable:
- at Jacksonville (10/18/18) – 4 receptions, 35 yards, 0 TD
- vs. Dallas (11/11/18) – 4 receptions, 48 yards, 0 TD
- at New Orleans (11/18/18) – 4 receptions, 33 yards, 0 TD
- vs. New York Giants (11/25/18) – 3 receptions, 39 yards, 0 TD
Adding to the disappointment has been the number of opportunities, with 5 targets or fewer in three of the four games. You could argue that the acquisition of Golden Tate has played a role in his struggles, and the Eagles’ newest wide receiver does have 8 targets in each of the past two games. Zack Ertz is also going to remain the focus of the passing game and the recent emergence of Josh Adams is going to limit the number of opportunities overall.
Obviously we wouldn’t give up on Jeffrey, but he also is more of a WR3/WR4 at this point meaning he’s hardly a must use option.
Stock – Falling (Now More of a WR3/WR4)
