Men in tights?

I have to admit, I’ve never been a fan of players wearing tights or leggings, even in training, so was not particularly impressed by World Rugby’s announcement that players at all levels of rugby will be permitted to wear tights or leggings during games.

The decision has, apparently, been implemented on “welfare and accessibility grounds” amid the increasing use of artificial surfaces, in other words, to prevent skinned knees.

I don’t know about you, but my experience of artificial surfaces is that the wearings of tights will make not one jot of difference to incidences of grazed knees/legs – the leggings would need to be pretty thick, I reckon, to be effective.

And given that, as I can make out, the permitted wearing of leggings is not restricted to games on artificial surfaces anyway, all it will achieve, I think, will be to make legs a little less cold during winter months.

Which, I dare to suggest, is all a bit pathetic.

Now, as for the wider debate around artificial pitches, I think that’s probably a topic for another time…
