Last Chance Saloon re-opens for business

It may be as a consequence of the UK emerging from Covid restrictions, but it appears that the famous old establishment, The Last Chance Saloon, is back in business.

I am referring to news that erstwhile splash-diving England winger, Chris Ashton, has been given a short term contract at Leicester Tigers, his SIXTH Premiership club, Ashton having fallen out with each of Harlequins, Sale Sharks and Worcester Warriors during the past 24 months or so.

Clearly reports of the end of the itinerant winger’s career (including by yours truly) have been somewhat premature.  

The move to Leicester clearly gives Ashton one more (last?) opportunity to overhaul Tom Varndell’s Premiership try-scoring record, but whether his arrival at Welford Road helps shore up the Tigers’ assault on this season’s Premiership title, or whether his presence proves to be a disruptive influence, remains to be seen.

Whatever its merits, it’s an interesting call by Steve Borthwick.
