Mobile structures: an entire village on tracks

If you’ve ever visited a quaint tourist town once or twice, and you’re anything like me, you never visit that destination again — regardless of how wonderful it is. After one or two visits, tops, I only re-visit places in the form of photographs and memories.

However, what if your favorite little tourist destination occasionally changed it’s geographical location? Say, it moved closer to some nearby mountains in the winter; and shuffled over toward a lake in the summer. A lot of people would be more likely to visit, to experience the mobile village at different times during the year.

I sure would. In fact, I’d love to be there to see the buildings pack it in and hit the rails.

That’s the idea behind a prize-winning entry in a Norwegian design competition. The firm that came up with the idea, Jagnefält Milton Architecture, proposes an elegantly novel idea: the small town of Åndalsnes.
