People who can control their dreams could use the unusual ability as a tool to learn, according to new research.

One Swiss study, led by Daniel Erlacher of the University of Bern, showed that lucid dreamers who ‘practiced throwing a coin into a cup were better at the real thing when they woke up.

Recently, researchers from Yale University found that lucid dreamers perform better in a gambling task, designed to test a part of the brain important to emotional decision-making and social interactions.

Peter Morgan at Yale University and colleagues think that this region can be trained, and his team are working on a program to train people using dreams.

According to a report at New Scientist [viaThe Daily Mail], Morgan hopes to be able to improve a person’s social control and decision-making abilities. “We know that by engaging circuits in the brain we can change its architecture,” he says.

Work Rapidly Made Into Dreams, Thanks To Lucid Dreamers

The problem with trying to do any sort of meaningful research into the way people dream is that it’s not exactly easy to give instructions to someone who is asleep. Most of us have no control over what we do when we’re sleeping, and limited memories of what we did.

But lucid dreamers have a unique ability to control what happens inside a dream. Therefor, a lucid dreamer could receive basic instructions and then carry them out in the dream — thus allowing researchers to collect reliable data.
