5 Most Ridiculous Patents

Pat On The Back  Apparatus

This self-congratulatory apparatus was designed by Ralph R. Piro of Lindenhurst, New York . It was awarded patent number 4,608,967 September 2, 1986. This system of apparatus has a simulated hand that is attached to a pivoting arm suspended from the shoulder of the wearer. The hand is manually swingable in and out of contact of the wearers shoulder in a patting motion whenever the wearer feels the need of appreciation. Who needs a friend now, eh?

Dog Umbrella

It is common knowledge that dogs like to rough it out in the outdoors and don’t mind rain or sunshine, but of the proud owners who care a little too much for their pets and pay hefty amounts to keep their pets’ coats shiny, do. Here’s a wacky invention from 1992 that never became a rage (we wonder why). The whole animal is covered with the protective plastic secured at the animals’ waist while there are holes in the front to facilitate breathing and avoid fogging up and losing sight. Most dogs wouldn’t like this but then again what choice do they have?

Imaginary Friend

This invention was initially designed in 1997 to have a portable desk for your automobile and half a friend to give you company so you don’t look ridiculous if you are in habit of talking to yourself from time to time. It is made to sit in your front seat and give the on lookers an impression that you’re not alone! Even if that doesn’t throw random stalkers away then a fake phone is attached to the device so you can make pretend calls to authorities to scare the desperadoes away… or not.

Banana Suitcase

Bananas are the gift of nature to humans that come with their own protective covering. But the inventor of the revolutionary banana suitcase, designed in 1993 didn’t think God gave it enough protection! How can a soft covering of banana peel save the fruit from bruises! That’s right, we don’t likes bruises on our bananas and we need this device to save our delicate fruit from the big bad world. So here’s the catch: what if our banana is fatter, longer, bigger, curvier or straighter then the ideal shape imagined to design the device? We’ll need an engineer to redesign the whole device according to the shape size and thickness of our fruit. Maybe bruises aren’t that bad after all.

Fly Trap

Nothing is as annoying as a pesky housefly that tries all that’s in its might to fly up your nose and into your brain. There are numerous ways to get rid of these horrid creatures such as: sticky fly paper. Effective, but it loses points in the visual appeal department. Some people also use electric bug zappers but the intense blue light and constant zapping sounds are almost as unnerving as the flies themselves. Some people use sprays but those can’t be too environment friendly or otherwise, safe. The solution to this everyday problem was proposed in 1993 in the form of an Artificial Fly Trap. The idea is very basic, artificial flowers are attached to hollowed stems lined with fly attractants and thousands of micro filaments that point downwards and are eventually attached to a convenient plastic bag concealed in a flower pot. Just like they say ‘they can check in but they can’t check out’.
