Summary: Two bright yellow-orange ESE of I-35N, Temple TX. Hovering level with each other, short black vertical trails.
Report:
Going to dinner with my grandparents in Temple, Texas. It was dusk, 6:15pm on November 7th, 2012. Driving (NNE) up the busy i-35N. I was seated in the backseat. I was gazing out of the right back passenger side absentmindedly, Directly to my right (ESE) I noticed two bright yellow-orange lights the size of a regular plastic thumbtack at about 20-25 degrees above the horizon. The bright lights were exactly level, about an inch apart from each other (naturally, the scale is my perspective) either hovering or moving exactly horizontally either toward or away from my point of reference. It is possible the lights were connected to either side of the same object. I noticed absolutely no wavering in the lights, so I alerted my grandparents. They are very rational business-owning folk, and they first wrote it off as helicopters in training. I pointed out (from my knowledge) that all commercial air vehicles must have blinking lights on the port and starboard, and that the head (or tail) lights of aircraft (including all standard personal and military craft) are always bright white, not the yellow-orange. My grandfather has had his pilots license for 30+ years and he agreed with me. He stated that he had never observed such an obviously large aircraft (or crafts) such as this (these). They have lived within a 15 mile vicinity of the sighting for 10+ years, and confirm there are no human architected objects (antennae, towers, buildings) in the line of sight of these objects. My family were moderately interested, and I was in complete awe of these unidentified objects. Five minutes pass with more speculation, no wavering in size nor distance apart. We then noticed black, thin, barely visible trails spanning two inches directly vertically from both lights. Ten more minutes pass and no visible change in the size, dimensions, level, orientation, visibility, nor trail (line/beam?) length…Although we had traveled an additional 9 miles NNE on the I-35N. We arrived at our destination at ~6:35pm, and the lights were still present, unchanging. We enter the restaurant and continue with our evening. Upon exiting the restaurant at ~7:10pm, the object(s) were no longer visible.
[Editor's note: At first I suspected flares but they do not last more than a few minutes, nor can they hover for that length of time. -Sunny]

Aircraft landing lights are white, but if they are seen at a distance, they can have a red, orange, or yellow tint due to atmospheric scattering of the blue component. This is also true of airport tower beacon lights. It is a sunset-like effect, but not as pronounced.
The observation that the lights did not move also implies a long distance. Even when driving a car, people can think that a bright light in the sky (like Venus) is tracking them until they notice that the Moon is doing the same thing. The black thin trails suggest aircraft jet exhaust. It could have been two large military aircraft on a distant “straight in” approach to an air force base or airport. But this does not seem to be a good explanation in this case.
Pehaps the military has developed a new kind of flare for battlefield illumination.
This reminds me of an incident I witnessed sometime between 1978 and 1984 in Scottsdale, Arizona. My mom and dad called me out to the backyard to witness something in the sky. It was a formation of 5 (?) lights, whitish-orange, in a V formation turning westward. They were absolutely silent, and with no navigation lights. I thought this was odd, because they were only a couple of miles from Phoenix Sky Harbor, a very busy international airport. But there is also a national guard base there, and another one nearby. I was a student pilot at the time, and had never seen anything like this. The formation must have been at least a mile across. I could estimate the size because when I fly, I can look down and see the city road grid marked off in squares one mile on a side. One mile from 5000 AGL does not look like much. The view can simply be reversed to estimate distances ground-to-air. I called ATC and wrote the Phoenix Gazette, but no explanations turned up. I still wonder what it was.
Lately, there has been increased open and official interest in the development of aerospace field propulsion systems. Much of the technology is within reach of the hobbyist, just as it was to some inventors in the 1920s (and possibly before). So I am surprised that there are not MORE reports of “UFOs” crawling out of the woodwork all over the world. Perhaps they are just not being reported.
