What Are These Weird Street Signs Being Installed in Las Vegas?

Strange new street signs being installed across Las Vegas are prompting suspicions from concerned readers, one of whom sent us the following images. Are these new signs part of the nationwide ‘Intellistreets’ rollout of so-called “smart” hubs that eavesdrop on conversations?

“My neighbor brought it to my attention that these very suspicious-looking road signs are being installed throughout Las Vegas on the major streets,” David wrote to us. “The enormous amount of road construction they are doing to install these must cost someone (the taxpayers, I’m sure) a fortune. My neighbor was quite alarmed when he saw these. He took photos and has been asking everyone if they know anything about them-no one will say anything; even the construction workers actually installing have no info about them. The signs are obviously electronic with large control boxes and antennae attached.”
Although it was reported last year that 41,000 new LED street lamps were being installed throughout Las Vegas, these devices don’t appear to be for lighting, they appear to be for displaying digital messages.

You are correct in your assessment. These are electronic signs (LED) and are used to redirect traffic to another highway or interstate route. As for the rest…well they have tin foil hats need you ask why?

Does anybody notice the center of the sign is an amalgamation of various interstate/highway shields? The top and bottom are text displays. Rather than post forty different signs on the side of the road, they are opting for an alternating digital sign…a single sign…that can announce the road’s designation. Many highways and interstates have multiple designations…a federal freeway number and a state highway number…and in some cases a city street name.

These signs from what one can tell, are both highway and interstate, but they can not be both….it wouldn’t make sense…agreed that there are txt on top and bottom, agreed they show both interstate shield and highway marker shield.

Surprise, there are many merging highways and byways and interstates in every state, anyone who uses freeways in a major city would know this, anyone who travels in rural areas would know this.

My bet is that these are emergency route markers. I bet that they are set to display the shortest way out of town in case of an emergency evacuation.
All road signs have been redesigned or in process of redesign to match European signs. In case of emergencies, they will display where the closest schools are, hospitals, heliports, airports..etc etc.
