3 Major Things Happened In Politics In Last 24 Hours

Thing 2: Last night in Texas, the minority of Liberals actually won against a massive super-majority of Republicans trying to slip a massive anti-abortion bill into the end of a special session. Hundreds of protestors showed up– probably the largest protest for the Texas State House in Texas history– and, well, here– read THIS:

It has some great short bits of video that are absolutely worth watching. It was pretty freaking amazing. Wendy Davis’ efforts made her go from “Wendy WHO?” to “Wendy– please run for prez of the U.S.– Davis!” all over Facebook and blogs this morning. I’m not a fan of abortion, especially mid-to-late term abortion, AT ALL. However, I understand how things can happen, and anyways– the Earth is massively overpopulated, so hey… Besides, the extremist direction Republican lawmakers have been taking things with their RAPE talk about how “women’s bodies have ways of shutting that down” (pregnancy from rape) or “rape kits clean a woman out so she won’t get pregnant” and shit like that..? And ALL these assertions, and many similar ones, are flat out FALSE– and yet they keep on saying them! They disgust me so much that even where I semi-agree with a few points they make– I end up realizing that if I’m going to err on the side of caution– AGAINST THEM seems the only direction to go.

Anyways, yeah-! This protest thing was pretty fucking amazing, all those women– many wearing orange shirts for some reason– yelling, chanting, clapping, so that a role-call and vote could not be called at the last minute. The vote didn’t go through in time, and repubs tried to cheat and turn back the clock, but were CAUGHT and had to concede they lost this round.

But not to worry, Gov. Rick Perry of Texas is promising another “emergency special” session of the Texas legislature to address the pending need for that anti-abortion bill to be passed. They probably will get it passed too– but I wonder at what price? High drama in the redneck state!

Thing 3: This morning the Supreme Court announced that DOMA–  the “Defense of Marriage Act” and Prop. 8 making same-sex marriage illegal in California were both unconstitutional and struck them both down!! AWESOME NEWS!! The rainbows and cheers made the morning a very special thing for many of us that were hoping for this news for a very long time.

Its the first time in a while that I’ve actually enjoyed watching and listening to the news, because for once it wasn’t about assholes and retards getting their way AGAIN. 3 things in 24 hours that made things very exciting and satisfying. So while I don’t particularly dwell upon political subjects for most of my posts, recent events deserve a special mention.

Honestly, I’m all for civil disobedience in the face of what’s coming in our future. I’m all for fairness. I’m all for embracing the TRUTH as opposed to a repeated and comforting lie. Maybe people are waking up a little. Maybe some are coming to their senses. I’m generally a cynical realist– but today I felt rather proud of what some of my fellow humans accomplished in my dying-empire nation and I just wanted to share that with you!
