Typhoon Remnants To Smash Into Pacific Northwest
If I go radio silent for a time this weekend or afterwards, it may well be because my electric power is out. We have this massive storm, the leftovers from a huge typhoon that hit Japan blowing into Oregon and Washington right now. (Get out the Geiger counters!)
In addition to constant winds, often gale-force, we in the valleys will get 2 to 3 inches of rain over the weekend, mostly on Sunday. The coastal mountains are supposed to get 6 inches of rain during the same period, and the Cascades up to 10!! For contrast, consider that those momentous floods in Colorado were from around 6-10 inches of rain in their mountain regions. Our region has been preparing for a few days now, and luckily its not cold or anything (60s during the day, 50s at night, very mild). But trees going down, washouts, and area flooding could be a problem. Our rivers, lakes, and piped systems should be fine overall without flooding because after the typical drought of summer we get here, there is room for extra water. However, streams and creeks in the mountains (or from them) could get quite active, and they’re pretty much expecting disaster up in the mountains. Roads getting washed away happens all the time up there and on the coast so areas will likely be cut off.
Where I live, we’re very protected from all these things except perhaps a power outage or fallen tree. Already, Oakmantle– the haunted Victorian that Robin owns and where she used to live (and where a couple of her kids and their families live now) has seen a massive branch from one of the 4 Oak trees that loom over the historic house came crashing down and take out parts of their fence and a neighbor’s fence.
I’ll update with any news as I go if we have power. Things are supposed to get especially exciting Sunday when the brunt of the deluge is supposed to hit. Already events across the 2 states have been cancelled en masse. I feel especially bad for the Renn Faire going on in the Portland area right now… its their first year and their final weekend will be a complete wash out! I sympathize– having gone through this:
