3 Odd Homes Built out of Spite

We have all been witness to or at least heard of feuding neighbors. Two men screaming at each other from their lawns about a tree that straddles both properties. One man wants to cut it down because it attracts ants. The other man doesn’t want the tree cut as it provides ample shade to his home. Land surveyors are called out, property maps are spread across the kitchen table. It’s amazing how such small things can bring out the absolute worst in people.

What happens when you take your feuding to the next level? What happens when your neighbor, your city, or anyone pisses you off and you take your spitefulness to the new heights? Well, here are a few examples of the temper flare-ups that ensue when someone can’t have their way. It is also proof that there are almost always loop-holes so that you can achieve what you want, one way or another.

The Nevada Spite House

In the 1950′s there were two miners, who for whatever reason didn’t get along. The first miner relocated to a new home to get away from the quarrel that he couldn’t snuff out between him and this other man. Instead of letting everything go, the second miner relocated his entire home to the property beside the first miner’s new home, so that the homes were mere inches away from each other. You could literally climb out one window and into the neighbors window. The second miner stated that he placed his home in that location so as to block wind and sunlight from that side of the house.

The Alameda Spite House

A hundred years ago, a young man inherited a plot of land in California. He had intentions of building his dream home on this land until the city placed a road directly through his portion of the land. To spite the city, he built a home anyway that was 10 feet wide and 54 feet deep. There are even portions of the second story that hang just over the road, as if to give the proverbial middle finger to the city.

The Skinny House

In 1874, two brothers inherited a piece of land from their father after he passed away. While the first brother was away at war, the second brother built his house, which occupied most of the land that was given to them. When the soldier returned from war his brother just assumed he’d never have the room to build his own home on the property, until he was proven wrong. Soldier boy not only built his own home that tapers off as you move toward the back (from 10 feet wide in the front, to 9.25 feet in the back), he made sure that the house was built just tall enough to block out the sunlight and ruin his brothers view of the city. The house still stands today and is occupied.

It’s just further proof that you don’t have to resort to violence to get even.
