New Doctor, Old Anxieties
I went to a doctor for the first time in Seattle since the last time I lived here at the age of 4. I got prepared with information and such, but tried not to think about it too much as that just increased my anxiety and I didn’t want to work myself up.
We had a hard time finding the place since the insurance company I’m signed up for doesn’t have their information updated YET AGAIN! (I need to call them back and tell them I think!) But I managed to get there almost on time and finished filling in the paperwork after my appointment, so it worked out. The building itself was a very confusing octagon built during the 70s I think… they had a dentist office AND a pharmacy right there, but I had to circle around and around to find what I needed.
I only cried once– when explaining why I’m phobic of doctors and therefore likely to have rather high blood pressure (when normally my blood pressure is just the high side of normal and used to be low.)
The facility is one of the few places that takes Medicaid and so every single doctor, receptionist, and pharmacist was either American born non-white OR foreign born. Which makes me wonder about the assumptions they make about the poor, because over half the patients were white… White doctors, nurses, etc. prefer not to deal with ‘the unwashed masses’ it seems!
Regardless, I got in, met my new female East Indian doctor, who was actually quite nice and didn’t push me (I told her outright not to try) and I got my prescriptions renewed, except Lyrica which isn’t covered by Medicaid UNLESS all the substitutes don’t work. So I’ll play along and try all the generics and near-formulas. If I can find a cheaper version that works, fine! If not, though, I’ll go through all the types and get my Lyrica eventually after jumping through some Big Brother hoops. (I’ll try not to complain as even my skimpy free insurance is likely to disappear thanks to Trump.)
After all that, I was spent– but Sharn took me to R.E.I. to splurge on one treat for myself I bought using the Patreon money: sports sandals called “Keens” that are WONDERFUL and elastic and built to last and SO comfy! They were on sale for $70 (as opposed to normal cost of $90) but I justify it because they are to help me get and stay fit and will last longer than cheap sandals. Also I felt I deserved something nice after FINALLY getting my ass to the doctor, which I dread so much I’ve avoided it for over 4 months now!
