Serious Air Force attention to Adamski “saucer” prototype

Ray Palmers magazine, Flying Saucers, for February 1969 (pictured here) presented, with Palmer caveats, some “detailed” material from a man, William Clendenon, that proposed Adamski’s “chicken brooder” saucer could be manufactured and flown, as it had, according to Mr. Clendenon, attributes that were aerodynamically feasible.

While Ray Palmer confirmed his [Palmer’s] view that Adamski was, indeed, a (likeable) fraud, he offered in his pages letters from the Air Force and Hughes Aircraft, along with the United States Patent Office – a few presented fully scanned for your perusal here – that showed Clendenon’s offerings were not eschewed out of hand by either the Air Force, Hughes, of the Patent Office:

One letter (from Curtis Kelly of the Air Force’s Aero Propulsion Division) went so far as to critique Clendenon’s proposals with point-by-point rebuttals of the science and technology errors that Clendenon’s suggestions contained.

This correspondence took place in the 1965-1968 time frame. It’s a fascinating account by Palmer showing that flying saucer “nonsense” wasn’t ignored by the military or industry before the Condon Report.

The rest of Palmer’s magazine had a pithy (useless) article by Kurt Glemser about airplane crashes – not UFO crashes – and lots of goofy stuff from Timothy Green Beckley and readers.

One can see that flying saucers once had serious cachet, no matter how obtuse material about the phenomenon was.
