Punk rocker Tom DeLonge, who has single-handedly revitalized (for now) ufology and the UFO topic altogether, has done what it seems UFO long-timers have never been able to do.
That is, DeLonge wheedled his way into the bureaucratic hallways of government and, by so doing, provided spurts to the UFO phenomenon among major news media organizations: The New York Times, The Washington POST, CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox,
et al.
No UFO acolyte after Donald Keyhoe has been able to do that, not in the quantity or with the attention that DeLonge has been able to pull off.
So, how did this tattooed rocker manage to get the attention of the national press?
The attention wasn’t created like a UFO Big Bang. It dribbled out at first and was catalyzed by the disclosure that the U.S. Pentagon had been conducting UFO investigation(s) of a sort for a few years, right up into 2012, providing obscure videos of military jets being accosted by strange things in the sky, supposedly. (The verdict on that is still out.)
Tom DeLonge was abetted by media persons who have long refrained from letting their readers, viewers, bosses know they were UFO aficionados, deep down and closeted.
Tom’s interest and arguably puny attempts at UFO disclosures brought these repressed UFO fans out into the open, His activity gave them cover.
They were covering him and the Pentagon, not UFOs.
Tom DeLonge is head over heels into UFOs accepting many of the long-ago discarded UFO canards (MJ-12, for instance).
But that hasn’t dissuaded the media from giving him lots of copy.
You see, some newsies are and have also been head over heels into UFOs and now they’ve been able to let their suppressed (self-censored) zeal rain down on the public.
The coverage is a cathexis for media folks.
I deal with media, everyday, and have for many years. Journalists (press and otherwise) and TV news staffers are a curious lot, usually, and held back from expressing their interests in favor of what their media owners and advertisers want to be made public.
UFOs are not one of those things, not up to now.
But along came a rebel rock and roller, a Pentagon secret activity and media was off and running, a catharsis in the making.
That’s how Tom deLonge did it. He was helped by the media minions who needed something to offset the disturbing Trump administration and general world woes, coupled by a long desire of UFO mavens in media who, up to now, had to keep their interest in UFOs hidden from their peers, and we all know why.
