This cartoon, in the April 16, 2018 New Yorker, sent me to my Catholic BIBLE to read the Jonah in the whale account, in my BIBLE as Jonas, in a two page chapter by that name, and the “thing” Jonas ended up in called “a great fish.”
If I recall correctly, some ancient astronaut “theorists” claim that Jonah (Jonas) found himself in an alien submersible, communicating, not with God, but extraterrestrials.
The suggestion is interesting but let’s try another approach.
Reading Jonah’s adventure in Chapter Three, where he prophesied in Nineveh (Ninive) that the inhabitants and that Assyrian capital itself were about to be destroyed by God because of their evil ways.
But the leaders and inhabitants of the capital repented in various ways, believing that God would relent, which God did, diminishing Jonah’s prophecy and Jonah himself, God explaining to Jonah, who was heavily troubled by seeming to be a false prophet, that the great city, with thousands of inhabitants, who had repented, were worthy of salvation despite Jonah’s pique.
So, let’s go back to the “great fish” episode.
Jonah, who had been thrown overboard, at his own request, by the crew of the ship he was on and which was in a maelstrom, found himself inside “the belly of hell” (he said) from which he called out to God for mercy.
This wasn’t a call to an alien presence but, rather, a plea from despair, by a man who was psychologically “at sea” (as psychiatrists might put it).
There was no “whale” or ET submersible.
And is this an indication of what some UFO witnesses (Betty/Barney Hill, Hickson/Parker, Travis Walton, Robert Taylor, et al.) experienced: a “nervous breakdown” as fiction has it, a psychological trauma?
Almost all UFO encounters can be explained by the psychiatric (or neurological) “science(s).”
