The Quantum Universe and UFOs

To wrap up (somewhat) the universe is a quantum computer thinking of Michael Brooks, let me try to convey his thoughts without egregiously screwing them up:

From Page 176 to 185, Dr. Brooks provides the quantum mechanisms that indicate the Universe is a quantum computer as proposed by Seth Lloyd.

But Seth Lloyd was bested in thinking that the Universe is a computer by Douglas Adams’ The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxywhich “portrays our planet as part of a huge computer designed to find the answer to the question of life.”

Adams’ “computer, Deep Thought, was inspired by an Isaac Asimov story, The Last Question, in which humans seek to reverse the inexorable increase in disorder in the universe.”

Dr. Brooks writes that “The Last Question, published in 1956, is a masterpiece” involving “humanity absorbed into the vast intelli- gence of the cosmos … It is by far Asimov’s favorite of all his writings ….” [Page 173]

He writes, however, that Lloyd “came up with the first design for a quantum computer that really could be built.” [Page 177]

And writes on Page 179, “What no one ha[s] yet realized is that a hugely powerful quantum computer already exists. You’re living in it.”

Then Brooks presents the quantum mechanic “tools” that allow the building of a quantum computer and how the Universe as we know it simulates such a computer.

The tools include quantum “superposition, entanglement, interference, the uncertainty principle, the fullerene.”

Books supporting the Universe as a quantum computer he cites include Seth Lloyd’s Programming the Universe, Heinz Pagel’s The Cosmic Code, and David Lindley’s Where does the Weirdness Go?

In the pages noted here are references to Ludwig Boltzmann’s most famous equation, S = k · log W, the second law of thermo- dynamics, information theory, and “That Big Bang we hear so much about is starting to get a little smaller, a little weaker.” [Page 185]

Michael Brooks gives some comfort to MJ Banias and Bryan Sentes who insist, along with Jacques Vallee that the UFO witness/observer is key to the UFO phenomenon.

Dr, Brooks offers the quantum mantra that observation is the key to quantum reality and it’s only when someone observes (measures during experimentation usually) a quantum event does the event actually take place; that is, nothing occurs until it is observed.

This, like Einstein’s qualm about quantum entanglement – “spooky action at a distance” — is hard to fathom but there it is.

Of course, that observation, while essential to the quantum creation, doesn’t explain anything. The observation measures or sets up an event, the essence of which has yet to be determined.

So, my point here is to make for some speculations – a few that I’ve presented a few times over the years.

One is that we are part of (living in) an alternate reality, the nature of which remains to be clarified or proven.

UFOs may be quantum artifacts. Macro quantum particles are allowable in science:

UFOs here may be entangled particles originating elsewhere, and used for observing us, sending back to an advanced civilization instant information.

Entangled UFOs would simplify space travel and communication: the limits to sound travel and the limitation of Einstein’s speed of light travel.

The observation (and reportage) of UFOs is flummoxed by the quirkiness of quantum particles, the observation itself compromised by the vicissitudes of quantum measurement/observation.

(And, oh yes, Dr. Brooks inserts an aside about consciousness, something I’ve tried to avoid but apparently has to be regarded when we consider anything, so expect some material on that topic. I apologize now.)
