Look For The Den Holes

Placing traps in an effective area can be tough, especially if you are not familiar with the area.  But if you find a den hole, you can bet that you will be increasing your chances of getting some dinner if you use this area for setting your trap or snare.  Discreetly placing traps or snares near a critter’s den hole can be an effective way to increase the chances that the critter will walk through your trap.

When placing the trap try to minimize your time in the area by having your trap as “pre-prepared” as much possible that way you are not leaving an abundance of scent in the area.  Also use a small amount of natural funneling to keep the critter from just walking around your trap.  Small sticks, brush, etc are good items to line up in a manner that will encourage them to walk through your trap. Don’t go over board as anything too obvious combined with your scent may be enough to scare them off depending on the type of animal.

The type of trap you use doesn’t really matter much as long as it is built properly and placed in a manner that will allow the trap to function properly when sprung.  That being said my favorite type of snare for a den hole is a simple wire loop tied off to a stake or small tree at one end and with a “loaded” slip loop in the other end.  See my post on squirrel poles for details on how to build this type of snare and check out this video to see how the loaded spring snare looks in action.  If the hole is the size of the ones pictures in this post or in the video below, you may want to twist 2 pieces of wire together to increase its strength.
