Our Favorite Survival Gun

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

When considering a must have survival gun the things I had to consider were weight of gun, weight of ammunition, cost of both gun and ammunition. So the survival gun we chose to add to our survival gear is a 22 semi auto. Keep in mind that in a survival situation my biggest concern is putting meat on the table. I know and understand that there are better rifles for hunting game primarily big game but if I bring down large game then I have to worry about preserving a large portion of it. I was taught how to properly smoke meat while living in Alaska but after you preserve it you have to store it where predators can’t get to it. So I would prefer to take smaller game as much as possible.

Ruger 10/22 (just my preference) is a very reliable gun and very inexpensive at around $200. It is very lightweight and the ammo is about 4 cents a shot. 150 rounds weigh about the same as 20 rounds of 30/06. I can easily carry 1000 rounds of ammo with me everywhere and would not take much effort to get 10,000 rounds to a base camp. You can get 25 round clips for about $25. It can take down small to medium size game. Even though it is not legal to hunt deer with a 22, they are still quite capable of taking one down. In a survival situation this is a lot of meat.

Because of the amount of ammo that can be carried and the amount that can be put rapidly down range it is also a nice protection gun. I know some people do not think they are a good protection gun but they need to look up the history of the 22 in the military. It is also a very quiet gun so it’s not as prone to giving away your position. So because of its lightweight, low costs, versatility, but mostly because of the sheer amount of fire power I can pack with me, this weapon this tops my list of must have guns for survival. Both cost and weight of the ammunition means I can pack a lot.

get a marlin 795. they’re cheaper and more accurate than an over-priced ruger.

Israeli Defense Force’s used the Ruger 10/22 for a close support sniper rifle out to 300m.. If you don’t believe me Google it! You can’t go with a better rifle.. Parts are easy to find and you can replace them yourself easily. Ammo is cheap too! I bought one recently for a backup to my main weapon an AR-15, another gun where parts are easy to find and ammo is plentiful…

The marlin 795 might be cheaper, but can you find the parts as easy as you can for the Ruger 10/22. How about 25 round magazines, 50 round drums and barrel replacements..

you got half of it correct….the cheaper part, but you get what you paid for.
