Build a Buck Saw From A Saw Blade

One of the problems with carrying a lot of larger cutting tools in a day pack or Bug Out Bag or even just on a family camping trip is all of the extra weight that comes along with the tools.  One way to save some weight in your pack is to learn how to build a Buck Saw from items found in nature, plus a few lightweight items that you bring in your pack.  I had never built a Buck Saw before but wanted to give it a shot.  Read on to see how I completed this little project.

What You Need To Build A Buck Saw

First and foremost you need a saw blade.  In the video below I used a 15″ replacement blade for a “Sawvivor” (http://sawvivor.com/), mostly because it was what I had on hand.  You could use any old bow saw blade or other type of saw blade as long as it has at least one hole in each end for you to fasten it to your saw.  Second, you will need at least two 1/4″ x 20 bolts about 1 1/2″ long with two wing nuts that fit them.  Third, you will need about 4 to 6 foot of cord or wire.  Fourth, you will need a good sharp pocket knife that has a saw, an awl, and a main blade.  For this project I used my Victorinox Silver Alox Farmer.  See a review I did on this knife here http://www.realitysurvival.com/3-bushcraft-knives-you-cant-afford-to-pass-up/.  Fifth, you will need four branches cut to the appropriate length, which is determined by the length of the blade you are using.  I explain how to determine the length in the video below.  I recommend using good solid seasoned (dead) hardwood approximately  1 1/2 ” in diameter or slightly larger.  I found green wood bent to easily.   Sixth and lastly you will need about 40 minutes of time and some patience.
