7 Food Storage Tips for Camping
Camping can be a fun way for families to spend time together. But, there’s no fun in being stuck in the woods without enough food to eat. Running out of food before the end of the trip can cut it short very quickly. When packing your camping foods, you need to make sure that everything lasts until your trip is over. If your food spoils, it’s no value to you and your family. Here are seven great tips for packing your food storage for your camping trip.
- Plan Your Meals –
Make a menu for each meal of every day of your camping trip, including snacks. Then, go through the menu and make a grocery list for each food item that will be needed for each meal or snack. Be sure to remember your condiments.
- Prep Ahead – Prep your foods before packing them for the trip. Wash all of your vegetables and fruits. Cut them up the way your family likes them and store them in Ziploc bags. Refrigerate them until it’s time to go. Then, place them in your cooler before leaving out the door.
- Containerize – Camping light is easier if you containerize your condiments. Instead of taking large bottles of family-sized condiments, store them in Tupperware containers. These can be conveniently stored in boxes or coolers during travel.
- Label Your Foods –
Make sure to label all of your Ziploc bags and Tupperware containers. This will make finding what you’re looking for easier while on the road and during your camping trip. This is a great way to prolong the shelf life of your food storage by opening containers as little as possible.
- Prep Side Dishes – Make sure to prep your side dishes. This will save time. You can spend more quality time enjoying your trip, instead of cutting onions and seasoning vegetables. Prep the foods and store them in plastic containers so they’re ready to go when it’s time to eat.
- Prepare Day 1 Meal – There’s a lot involved with getting set up on the first day. After traveling to your camping site, checking in, setting up the tents and inflating beds, everyone will be hungry. So, you should make sure that first meal is already prepared. Make your sandwiches and wrap them in baggies. Then, cut your lettuce and tomatoes and store them in separate baggies before you leave. Once you’re all set up, put the veggies on the sandwiches, add some chips and boxed juices and there you go.
- Prep Your Raw Meats – Be sure to marinade your meats the night before your trip. Wrap them individually in freezer storage bags and store them in the freezer until right before you leave. Store them in a cooler during your travel. Pack the cooler with dry ice or ice packs to keep them frozen during your trip. Each morning, take out the meats you plan to eat that day to thaw them out for cooking. This will ensure that your meats don’t spoil before you get a chance to cook them and your other food storage while camping.
