Time for Prepper Guidance and Conversation with Cap’n Dave

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

My guest on DestinySurvival Radio yesterday was Captain Dave Young.

“Who?” you may ask.

My show’s producer Steve asked that, too. He wanted to know if Cap’n Dave was somebody well known in the prepper industry.

Well, no. Actually, he’s a guy who’s prepping like you and me. And he humbly claims not to be an expert. But in a nutshell, he’s a pilot, diver and instructor with quite a credentialed resume.

After responding to one of my “DestinySurvival Dispatch” messages, we began corresponding and had a good chat via Skype one day. I asked him to be my show guest because of his perspective on survival and prepping.

So yesterday we engaged in what I think you’ll find to be interesting conversation. We weren’t trying to sell anything, except an idea or two. Consider it as prepping guidance.

An Instructive Example

Dave’s life experiences and occupations since his youth helped him develop a survival mindset. And that may be the most useful asset a prepper can have.

He learned about self sufficiency from hunting with his dad as a boy. SCUBA diving, cave diving and aviation added to his survival mindset by teaching key principles on the importance of…

  • Situational awareness
  • Proper training
  • Familiarization with equipment and procedures
  • Making a plan and having back up plans
  • Setting priorities
  • Working with others as a team
With this in mind, Dave asked himself what he was taking for granted. For example, we all assume the lights will come on when we flip a switch. But what if that doesn’t happen one day?

Here’s why I say Dave’s example is instructive. You may already have skills and a frame of mind which give you an edge for preparedness.

Do as Dave did. Stop. Analyze your situation. Realize your present assets. Be adaptable and willing to explore new things.

Sure, you may have much yet to learn. But we each already have talents and abilities which will be useful to ourselves and others as we prepare to survive whatever comes our way.

Bug Out Planes?

As strange as it may sound, we talked for a few minutes about using small planes as bug out vehicles. It’s a novel option most of us won’t be able to take advantage of. But it may be worth consideration for some.

If you aren’t able to buy a plane and take flying lessons, you might want to get to know a charter or air taxi company and keep their number on speed dial in a pinch.

Gimme Survival Shelter

Dave’s a fan of ICF (insulated concrete form) houses. They’re sturdy enough to withstand tornadoes, quiet indoors and not much more expensive to build than a conventional home.

If you’re interested in knowing more, Dave recommends doing a Google search on insulated concrete forms for homes. I’ve also featured a short video on a previous post about innovative concrete ideas for survival shelters.

Dave also shared his recommendation for using propane in emergencies for light, heat and cooking.

Of Watchdogs and Weather

Want a $15 watchdog? How about a motion sensing driveway alarm system?

How would you like to be your own weatherman? Knowlege of weather is practical for everyday living and in a survival situation. Dave wants to put together a course on DVD combining modern weather forecasting knowledge with instruction on signs and lore from past generations.

He asks for your feedback or input on Weather Predicting 101. Get in touch with Dave at junk123(at)embarqmail.com. Replace (at) with @ when typing out the e-mail address.

Hear my whole conversation with Dave Young by listening to DestinySurvival Radio for October 11, 2012. Some of what we discussed yesterday could have filled its own dedicated hour and then some. Cap’n Dave has a lot more prepper guidance to offer, so he’ll be a returning guest.

I’d love to know your thoughts on what you heard from Dave and I on yesterday’s show. Leave a comment below or contact me via the Contact tab above.
