Martial Arts

We posted on our Facebook page:

Do you study a martial art? If so, why? Also, why specifically do you study that one?
Some comments we received:

Comment #1:  Yes. Brazilian Ju Jitsu and Muay Thai. I study Ju Jitsu because over 90% of fights go to the ground and that is way to high of a percentage to not know how to ground fight. Also I believe it is the must effective martial art as it teaches you how to use your opponents body against them. I study Muay Thai because it’s always nice to know how to take someone out if you cant take them to the ground.

Comment #2:  As a younger man, I studied several. Wing Chun was the one I favored and studied the longest. I liked that it was very succinct and translated to my intended use best. In retrospect, it was probably the most local and available at the times I had time and dedication. Honestly, it would take a serious event for me to be able to prove I was ever that disciplined nowadays. Some of it you never lose though.

Comment #3:  Krav Maga and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. To me Krav Maga is the most effective martial art because it blends techniques that work for self defense into one. I’m taking BJJ to help with my grappling.

Comment #4:  Kick-Boxing in college, AKA Newark, NJ street fighting. Krav Maga for a year a little while ago. Because the street is not a spectator sport, it is survival. Going to the ground with one adversary while the other 2 guys stab and kick you is not an option I am into. Fight hard and fast vertically. Spent years working in a bar and doing Executive Protection…vertical is good.

Comment #5:  Krav Maga for serious skills. Judo and a variation of CQB taught by some armed services. Taekwando was great for distance attacks but as I get older the Krav Maga makes the most sense. I do it for safety as well as a sense of inner piece. Meditation has been the most valuable learned exercise and has helped me for years.
